Republicans Put IVF Front and Center by Tapping MAGA Extremist Katie Britt for GOP Response to State of the Union

In response to Republicans choosing Alabama Senator Katie Britt to provide their response to next week’s State of the Union, DNC Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd released the following statement:

“Republicans have been running, dodging, and hiding their extreme position against IVF all week, but today they chose to catapult their anti-freedom extremism to center stage by tapping anti-choice extremist Katie Britt to deliver their State of the Union response. Britt should be more concerned about the state of her state, but she has still refused to condemn the devastating court ruling that ripped away the promise of a family for so many Alabamans. Make no mistake: Britt and her fellow MAGA extremists are backing a cruel, dangerous, and unpopular anti-choice agenda that would outlaw abortion nationwide and risk access to IVF for Americans trying to grow their family.”

Katie Britt is an anti-abortion extremist whose far-right position puts IVF treatments at risk. She has refused to say whether she agrees with the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that is stopping IVF, encouraged the overturning of Roe, and refused to condemn fellow Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville’s shameful blockade of military nominations and promotions.

AL.com: “[Britt] did not comment on whether she agrees with the court ruling that frozen embryos are ‘children.’”

Britt: “I am proud to be 100% pro-life. Both my faith and the science tell me that life begins at conception.”

AL.com: “U.S. Senate Republican candidate Katie Britt has called herself ‘100% pro-life,’ and said she will fight for anti-abortion measures if she wins the seat.”

Britt: “My family and I are praying that the Supreme Court finally overturns Roe this year.”

Britt opposes the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would enshrine abortion rights across the country.

Politico: “[Britt] was nearly as restrained when I asked her about Tuberville’s hold on military promotions in protest of the Biden administration providing service members with abortion access, a blockade that has irritated many Senate Republicans. In fact, she dodged my question entirely when I asked her if her fellow Alabama senator is doing the right thing. After a pause, she criticized the administration’s abortion policy and said it was ‘critically important’ that Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer take up senior officer promotions on the floor, as he did this week, without ever mentioning Tuberville.”

Britt has been endorsed by and received high scorecard ratings from a number of extreme anti-choice groups such as National Right to Life and SBA Pro-Life America.

This week, Senate Republicans blocked basic protections for IVF, while 125 House Republicans – including Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson – have supported the Life at Conception Act, which DOES NOT include any exceptions for IVF treatment.

Associated Press: “Republicans block Senate bill to protect nationwide access to IVF treatments”

Business Insider: “Most House Republicans have cosponsored a bill declaring that life begins from the moment of conception, a position under increased scrutiny after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are ‘unborn children.’

“This Congress, 125 House Republicans — including Speaker Mike Johnson — have cosponsored the ‘Life at Conception Act,’ which states that the term ‘human being’ includes ‘all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.’

“The bill does not include any exception for in vitro fertilization (IVF), a reproductive treatment that allows mothers to fertilize several eggs outside the womb in order to increase the chances of a viable pregnancy.”

NBC News: “But with the landmark Roe ruling protecting those rights gone, efforts by conservative lawmakers and judges to advance fetal personhood bills pose a real threat to some fertility treatments, including IVF, reproductive rights advocates say.”

Politico: “Dozens of congressional Republicans have signed onto so-called personhood legislation with no carve-out for embryos in clinics, which, if enacted, would upend how the procedure is practiced in the United States.”

Make no mistake: Donald Trump made possible the Alabama Supreme Court decision that is stopping IVF treatment – and he is still bragging about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade and demanding credit for extreme abortion bans across the country.

CNN: “How the reversal of Roe v. Wade led to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that frozen embryos are children”

New York Times: “[The Alabama ruling was] made possible by the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in its 2022 Dobbs decision, which was a result of Mr. Trump’s appointment of three justices.”

Trump: “For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it, and I’m proud to have done it. … Nobody else was going to get that done but me, and we did it, and we did something that was a miracle.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”

FWIW: “This week, we found more evidence that the Trump campaign has no interest in ‘moderating’ on the issue of abortion. On Monday, his team began running new Facebook video ads targeting voters in Iowa, referring to Trump as ‘THE MOST Pro-Life President in history.’”
