On the Anniversary of Social Security, Trump and Republicans Have Turned Their Backs on Seniors

Social Security was created 91 years ago today to provide a lifeline for Americans to be able to retire with dignity and peace of mind, yet despite Donald Trump’s repeated promises that Social Security is “100% safe,” Trump, JD Vance, and Republicans are making it harder for American seniors to receive their hard-earned benefits.

Social Security is one of the most popular and successful programs in America, as nearly 9 out of 10 Americans over the age of 65 receive Social Security benefits; plus over 6 million children and 9 million veterans are beneficiaries.

REMINDER: In July of last year, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted that the Trump Accounts are a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security.” Then, Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano revealed he would consider raising the retirement age. And Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz said on numerous occasions that Americans should “not retire” in order to generate money to reduce the national debt.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

“For over 90 years, Social Security has provided a lifeline to millions of American families, giving workers a dignified way to retire and lifting more people out of poverty than any other program. Since taking office, Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Republicans have waged a war on the benefits that Americans rely on — turning their backs on working families to give tax cuts to the ultra-rich. Workers today deserve to know that the benefits they’ve paid into their whole lives will be there when they retire — and voters will remember who stood up for them in November.”
