On the 63rd anniversary of the March on Washington, Democrats honor Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and every trailblazing civil rights leader by committing to fight back against Donald Trump and Republicans’ attacks on every American’s sacred right to vote. Trump, whose approval rating continues to tank to historic lows, knows his failed record of sky-high costs and chaos will lead Republicans to defeat this November. That’s why, after the Supreme Court functionally gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais, Republicans are doing everything they can to dilute the voting power of Black and Latino voters in a desperate attempt to cling to power.
Democrats are fighting tooth and nail against Republican attempts to rip away Americans’ access to the ballot box. Just this week, the DNC, DCCC, DSCC, DGA, and congressional leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries took the Trump administration to court over their unlawful attempts to restrict mail-in voting. Additionally, 24 Democratic attorneys general and Governor Josh Shapiro sued to block this action from the Trump administration. Earlier this summer, the DNC filed an amicus brief in Watson v. RNC — a shameless attempt by Republicans to eliminate grace periods for mail-in ballots received after Election Day — which the Supreme Court ultimately rejected.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“In the wake of partisan attacks against the Voting Rights Act, we are organizing, registering new voters, and protecting the sacred right to vote. As racial gerrymanders try to draw Black and Brown members of Congress out of their seats, we are fighting back to ensure voters can elect leaders who represent them — that is how we honor all the civil rights activists who paved the way for us. Even when the odds are against us, we will keep fighting and organizing to protect every American’s right to vote.”
In the aftermath of the Louisiana v. Callais decision and amid the Trump administration’s threats to undermine voters’ access to the ballot box, Democrats have been fighting nonstop to hold Republicans accountable and ensure the voices of all Americans are heard this November.
- The DNC sued the Trump administration for failing to respond to FOIA requests regarding potential plans to deploy federal agents to polling places and about potential plans to seize ballots during the midterm election.
- The DNC also filed a number of legal briefs to combat Republican attempts to disenfranchise thousands of U.S. citizens abroad, most notably military families.
- The DNC stopped Republicans from kicking nearly a quarter of a million voters off the rolls in North Carolina.
- The DNC put 10 states on notice that were being pressured to hand over sensitive, unredacted voter files to the DOJ and to agree to purge voters at DOJ’s request, indicating that the actions DOJ was demanding could violate federal law.
- Democratic governors in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington have also signed critical voter protections into law.
