SHOT: Donald Trump promised to cut energy prices in half in the first year of his presidency…
Trump in 2024: “I will cut the price of energy and electricity in half… 12 months from January 20th, I take office on January 20th, your electric bill, including cars, air conditioners, heating, everything, your total electric bill will be 50% less. We’re gonna cut it in half.”
CHASER: …18 months into Trump’s presidency, a new report shows that 2026 is on track to be the most expensive year ever for residential electricity costs in the U.S.
U.S. Energy Information Administration: The average price of electricity in the first five months of this year was 8% higher than the same period last year, and from Trump’s inauguration in January 2025 to May 2026, residential electricity rates have risen by a whopping 19.6%.
Another report found that families in the U.S. paid $110 more for electricity in 2025 than they did in 2024. Meanwhile, Americans have spent a combined $6o billion more on gas because of Trump’s war with Iran, meaning the average family has spent over $500 more on gas.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump vowed to cut energy prices in half, yet a year and a half into his second term, Americans are facing the highest electricity prices on record. Trump’s deadly and costly war with Iran is pushing prices up at the pump and grocery stores even higher — and he doesn’t seem to care. Trump and Republicans have abandoned working families, small businesses, and farmers, forcing them to shoulder sky-high prices while billionaires and big corporations profit.”
