Heading into the midterms, Trump is underwater with voters and Democrats have a 12-point advantage over Republicans among “very enthusiastic” voters as Trump claims he doesn’t “care about the midterms”
Donald Trump is meeting with House Republicans at the White House today as his approval ratings sink to record lows and his base continues to fracture. Trump’s net approval currently sits at a dismal -17 points — and nearly -45 points with independents. He is also underwater on his handling of Americans’ most important issues, including the economy (-26) and inflation (-42).
Even Trump’s base has turned their backs on him. A new poll last week found that only 15% of people “strongly approve” of Trump’s job performance — a record low in the poll’s history and 12 points lower than when Trump returned to office. Among white voters who didn’t graduate from college — a group Trump won handily in 2024 — a dismal 24% strongly approve of his job performance.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump has broken promise after promise to his voters, so it’s no wonder his presidency is historically unpopular and Republicans are heading towards defeat in the midterms. Trump vowed to lower costs and stop endless wars, yet Americans are shouldering high prices and a deadly and costly war with Iran that Trump can’t get out of. While Trump doubles down on his self-serving, reckless agenda and claims he doesn’t care about the midterms, Americans are fed up and will hold Republicans accountable in November.”
As Trump admits he “love[s] the inflation” and doesn’t “think about Americans’ financial situations,” two-thirds of Americans say groceries are unaffordable, a 21-point jump from before Trump started his war with Iran. By a more than 3-to-1 margin, Americans say the economy is getting worse and more than twice as many voters say their personal economic situation is getting worse than getting better. Meanwhile, Trump’s deadly and costly war with Iran — which has already cost consumers nearly $150 billion, about $1,100 per household — is the most unpopular war since polls have been taken.
