With less than one week until the midterm elections, we’re revisiting Donald Trump’s own words to Americans over the last 21 months of his presidency. His message to voters has been clear: Trump and his administration would rather spend billions of taxpayer dollars on reckless foreign wars and countless vanity projects instead of funding critical assistance programs or bringing down costs for millions of Americans.
Here’s what Trump has said:
- “It’s not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things.”
- “We can’t take care of daycare. We’re a big country. We have 50 states. We have all these other people. We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of daycare.”
- “No one gives a [bleep] about housing.”

In response, DNC Deputy Communications Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s priorities are as clear as day: ‘Trump First, Americans Last.’ Thanks to Trump’s economic agenda, prices are skyrocketing and working families are struggling to afford healthcare, housing, and childcare. Trump has callously ripped away funding for critical programs for working families and then turned around and spent billions of taxpayer dollars on foreign wars and vanity projects, all the while giving tax cuts to the ultra-rich. Americans know that Trump has abandoned them for his own self-interest, and voters are ready to deliver major defeats to Republicans next week.”
