As Trump hosts lavish fundraisers, his administration wants Americans to take on more debt for medical bills they can’t afford after Republicans made healthcare more expensive
This weekend, Donald Trump is hosting a $1 million per plate fundraiser to benefit his super PAC, MAGA Inc., ahead of his 80th birthday, as Americans struggle to get by in his economy. Under Trump, families have had to pay more than $3,100 for goods and services like gas, groceries, and healthcare – and now, Trump officials want Americans to take out loans for medical bills they can’t afford after Republicans made healthcare more expensive for tens of millions of families.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“As Donald Trump throws lavish fundraisers, birthday celebrations, and spends hundreds of millions on vanity projects with his name on them, Americans are grappling with skyrocketing prices that he caused, on everything from groceries and gas to unaffordable healthcare, while wages just aren’t keeping up. Trump and Republicans have never even tried to fulfill their Day One promise to make life more affordable. Instead, they are spiking costs, gutting healthcare, and ripping food away from working families. While Trump dines and parties with his rich friends and enriches his already wealthy donors, his callous indifference to the pain of Americans is on full display.”
Trump and Republicans slashed nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid, then refused to extend the popular enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits, forcing insurance premiums to increase by an average of 58% and causing ACA enrollment to initially drop by over 1 million. More than a third of American families already have medical debt, as nearly half of working-age adults had difficulties affording health care in 2025. And now Trump officials want Americans to take on more debt to cover skyrocketing out-of-pocket medical costs.
