Donald Trump announced today that he is promoting Stephen Miller to White House Chief of Staff after firing Susie Wiles from the job. Miller is Trump’s Deputy Chief of Staff, domestic policy advisor, and the architect of Trump’s worst policies, including the One Big Beautiful Bill, his cost-raising tariffs and war with Iran, and his nationwide campaign of terror that has ripped apart families and brutalized communities. Miller’s promotion and Wiles’ ouster come just days after Trump and Republicans faced the largest midterm defeat in 50 years by Democrats who captured overwhelming majorities in Congress.
Following the announcement, JD Vance endorsed Miller’s promotion, posting, “Stephen Miller is an amazing patriot and will do great things. Congrats to him on a well-deserved promotion!”
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Days after Americans delivered a historic rebuke of Donald Trump, JD Vance, and Republicans in the midterm elections, Trump is elevating the architect of his failed agenda, Stephen Miller, to serve as his top advisor. Miller is the mastermind behind Trump and Vance’s cruel, corrupt, and costly agenda, and the reason that Americans have been shot and killed on the street with impunity. On Tuesday, Americans made it clear that they are fed up with Republicans’ failure to deliver on their promises, yet Trump and Vance are doubling down by backing Miller. January can’t come soon enough: Democrats will hold this administration accountable and deliver real results for Americans.”
Miller has worked for Trump since his first presidential campaign, engineering and directing the White House’s cruel and costly domestic agenda:
- Miller has been an ardent supporter of Trump and Vance’s tariffs that jacked up prices for consumers, farmers, and small business owners, and are expected to cost households an additional $1,000 per year.
- Miller backed the Trump-Vance administration’s deadly and costly war with Iran that has forced gas prices above $4 a gallon for 181 days this year alone — the most in a year on record.
- Miller defiantly supported Trump and Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill — which cut healthcare and food assistance to pay for tax cuts for the ultra-rich — calling it “the most MAGA bill ever passed.”
- Miller oversaw a policy of terrorizing communities by not deporting the “worst of the worst,” but by calling for all asylum seekers to be deported as their claims were “fake” and “phony.”
- After federal immigration agents killed Alex Pretti and Renee Good, Miller immediately slandered the victims and spread lies, calling them domestic terrorists and calling Pretti “a would-be assassin.”
- Miller advocated for Republicans to seek retribution against Democrats during a second Trump administration.
- Miller also “participated in efforts to spread false information about alleged voter fraud in the November 2020 election, as well as efforts to encourage state legislatures to alter the outcome of the November 2020 election by appointing alternate slates of electors.”
- Miller was the architect of the attempted “Muslim ban” and the “zero tolerance” immigration policy, forcing the separation of thousands of children from their parents and trying to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
- Leaked emails revealed Miller promoted theories popular with white supremacists while part of the Trump 2016 campaign.
- When Trump proposed invading Greenland, Miller even began pushing the idea of the U.S. overthrowing national governments and taking foreign territory.
