VANCE TOWN HALL: Families, Farmers, and Small Businesses Are Shouldering The Cost Of Trump And Vance’s Reckless Tariffs

Donald Trump and JD Vance’s trade war sent the economy into a tailspin and hiked prices for families, farmers, and small business owners. Trump and Vance’s most recent tariffs are expected to worsen economic conditions in states that are already struggling. Meanwhile, American consumers and businesses have already shouldered 96% of the costs of the initial tariffs, and Americans have paid an additional $4,700 on goods and services since Trump and Vance took office

Small businesses have been particularly hit hard, as the smallest U.S. businesses lost jobs for five straight months and are down by more than 70,000 jobs so far this year.

In response, DNC Deputy Communications Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

“Donald Trump and JD Vance’s reckless tariffs have made it nearly impossible for families, farmers, and small businesses to make ends meet. Trump and Vance are out of touch with everyday Americans and indifferent to the financial pain they’ve caused them as they double down on their tariffs. Despite promising to lower prices on ‘Day One,’ costs on nearly everything are skyrocketing.”

The September jobs report revealed that Trump’s job market added a meager 29,000 jobs last month — well below economists’ expectations — while employment in July and August combined was revised down by 60,000 and the unemployment rate increased to 4.2%.

Inflation continued to swallow workers’ wages as wage growth hit a five-year low and the number of people who say that it’s hard to get a job right now has hit its highest point since early 2021. U.S. job openings fell by 256,000 in August — including big drops in construction and manufacturing jobs.
