What They Are Saying: Wisconsinites Fire Back After Trump Calls Milwaukee a “Horrible City”

This morning, as Donald Trump met with Republicans on Capitol Hill, he called Milwaukee a “horrible city.”

Milwaukeeans made their own disdain for Trump clear back in 2020, when Milwaukee County went for President Biden by 40 points, as Milwaukeeans joined the rest of the state of Wisconsin in helping send President Biden to the White House and defeat extremist Donald Trump.

Here’s what Milwaukeeans, Wisconsinites, and Americans across the country are saying:

Headlines:

Wisconsin Examiner: “Trump tells House Republicans Milwaukee is a ‘horrible city’”

Key Point: “In a closed door meeting with Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, Donald Trump reportedly called Milwaukee, the location of this summer’s Republican National Convention, a ‘horrible city.’

“‘Milwaukee, where we are having our convention, is a horrible city,’ Trump is reported to have said on Thursday…

“‘Donald Trump attacking the great city of Milwaukee as a ‘horrible city’ exactly one month before he shuffles out on stage at the Fiserv reflects the backward, twisted man Donald Trump has always been,’ Wisconsin Democratic Party Vice Chair Felesia Martin said. ‘With entertainment, recreation and a quality of life that is unparalleled — to say nothing of a great basketball team — I am blessed to call Milwaukee home. We’re used to Republican politicians like Donald Trump showing nothing but contempt for Milwaukee and the folks who live here: they know our power, and they’re afraid of the city we are building here, together. Once again, Trump has demonstrated why he should not be elected to the highest office in the land. He does not possess the discipline, respect, thoughtfulness, nor the maturity necessary to lead our country.’”

Associated Press: “Trump refers to Milwaukee as ‘horrible’ just before the city hosts the Republican convention”

Key Point: “Former President Donald Trump used the word ‘horrible’ in talking about Milwaukee — the city where he will accept the Republican nomination next month — during a closed-door meeting Thursday with GOP congressmen, according to several people in the room who spoke afterward…

“President Joe Biden’s campaign and his Democratic allies pounced on the reported remark even as Wisconsin Republicans contested how it was being interpreted. Biden posted a photo on the X social platform of himself greeting the Milwaukee Bucks after their 2021 NBA championship with the message: ‘I happen to love Milwaukee.’”

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: “Donald Trump calls Milwaukee ‘a horrible city’ weeks before RNC comes to town”

Key Point: “‘Once he’s settled in with his parole officer, I am certain he will discover that Milwaukee is a wonderful, vibrant and welcoming city full of diverse neighborhoods and a thriving business community,’ U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore.”

Politico: “Wisconsin Dems tear into Trump after he reportedly called Milwaukee ‘a horrible city’”

Key Point: “‘Donald Trump was talking about things that are horrible,’ the Democratic mayor said when he addressed Trump’s remarks in an unrelated press conference Thursday. ‘All of us lived through his presidency. So right back at you, buddy.’”

CBS58: “Report: Donald Trump calls Milwaukee ‘horrible city’ during meeting with GOP lawmakers”

Key Point: “Milwaukee is an amazing city, attracting millions of visitors every year who fall in love with everything we know makes this city great. The Washington Post just named Milwaukee one of the best cities in the country in the summer. ‘Top Chef’ loved Milwaukee so much they filmed a season here. We know it’s only a matter of time before everyone discovers all of the amazing things we have to offer, too!”

New York Times: “Behind Closed Doors, Trump Disparages Milwaukee, Host of His Party’s Convention”

Key Point: But the buzz around Mr. Trump’s off-piste remarks was reminiscent of the hubbub that often surrounded his meetings while he was president, when attention-grabbing outtakes leaked by those in the room would often overshadow the topic at hand.”

Elected Officials:

President Joe Biden: “I happen to love Milwaukee.”

Mayor Cavalier Johnson: “Milwaukee loves you back, President Joe Biden! 🇺🇸”

Biden for President Campaign: Milwaukee Mayor Johnson: Donald Trump calls Milwaukee ‘horrible.’ Let’s talk about things that are horrible. All of us lived through his presidency. So, right back at you buddy. I find it kind of strange that he would insult the largest city in Wisconsin because he’s running for president. To insult the state that’s hosting your convention, I think is kind of bizarre. Actually, it’s kind of unhinged. You’re calling our home ‘horrible.’ I don’t quite understand that”

Sen. Tammy Baldwin: “Milwaukee makes the greatest beer, brats, and motorcycles in the world. It’s home to some of our most vibrant communities, hardest workers, and is a part of what makes Wisconsin the best state in the nation. Donald Trump wouldn’t understand even if a jury told him so.”

Sen. Tammy Baldwin: “Donald Trump called Wisconsin’s largest, most diverse, and economically powerful city ‘horrible.’ He couldn’t be more wrong. The people of Milwaukee will remind him this November.”

Governor Tony Evers: “Add it to the list of things Donald Trump is wrong about. 🤡”

Rep. Gwen Moore: “Once he’s settled in with his parole officer, I am certain he will discover that Milwaukee is a wonderful, vibrant and welcoming city full of diverse neighborhoods and a thriving business community.”

Ben Wikler, WI Democratic Party Chair: “The GOP wants to enjoy Milwaukee’s hospitality while they host their convicted felon wannabe dictator coronation party—but behind closed doors, Trump and his DC cronies are insulting Milwaukee while they plot to suppress Milwaukeeans’ votes & rip away their freedoms. Fight back.”
