Yesterday, a Republican lawmaker in Florida introduced a bill modeled after the recent Texas abortion ban. DNC spokesperson Adonna Biel released the following statement: 

“Despite overwhelming public support for access to safe and legal abortions, Republicans have continued their 50-year, unreleenting war on women’s health and the freedom to make decisions about their own health care. Florida Republicans’ efforts are just the latest example of gross political attempts by extremists to get involved in a decision made by a person and their health care provider. In the midst of all of this, Governor Ron DeSantis pleads ignorance and refuses to say whether he would sign this latest attack because he knows his radical views are wildly out of touch with his constituents. 

“Floridians deserve to know where DeSantis stands on this heinous and dangerous legislation. Though he might try to hide it, Democrats will continue to hold him, and all Republican officials, accountable for their all out-war on reproductive health care.”

Florida Politics: Ron DeSantis bobbles question about ‘heartbeat’ abortion bill

  • Speaking in Kissimmee Wednesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis struggled with a question about newly filed legislation imposing strict, Texas-style restrictions on abortion.
  • “Asked to compare and contrast “The Florida Heartbeat Act” (HB 167), a House bill banning abortions after the fetus develops a heartbeat, with what a reporter called ‘freedom of choice during the pandemic,’ DeSantis fumbled and ultimately offered an inconclusive answer.”
  • “Well, I think the difference is between, uh, the right to life is that another life is at stake. Whereas whether you’re doing stuff is really … if you’ve put something in your body or not, it doesn’t affect other people. So that’s in terms of protecting another life,” the Governor asserted.
  • Asked to come back to HB 167, DeSantis demurred that he had not “seen what was there.”
  • While DeSantis claims not to have seen HB 167, sponsored by Deltona Republican Rep. Webster Barnaby, he has been asked to comment on a Texas-style heartbeat abortion bill before. He wasn’t clear then either.
