Trump repeatedly promised he would not cut Medicare or Medicaid, but his new budget released today includes more than $1 trillion in cuts to both of these vital programs.

Trump made a campaign promise not to cut Medicare or Medicaid.

Trump: “I was the first & only potential GOP candidate to state there will be no cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid. ”

Trump: “Now, also at stake in tomorrow’s election are your Medicare benefits. That’s a big deal. Democrats want to raid Medicare to find socialism. It won’t last long. Republicans will protect Medicare for our great seniors who have earned it.”

Trump: “Republicans stand for protecting Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and strengthening the safety net for truly needy Americans.”

Trump’s budget calls for cutting $845 billion from Medicare.

Washington Post: “Trump for the first time calls for cutting $845 billion from Medicare, the popular health care program for the elderly that in the past he had largely said he would protect.”

Trump’s budget proposes a major disruption to Medicaid by turning it into a block grant program, slashing its funding and eliminating the ACA’s expansion program.

Washington Post: “His budget would also propose a major overhaul of Medicaid, the health care program for low-income Americans run jointly with states, by turning more power over to states. This would save $241 billion over 10 years.”

Washington Post: “The spending plan calls for a cut of nearly $1.5 trillion in Medicaid over 10 years and for $1.2 trillion to be added for a new ‘Market Based Health Care Grant’ — that is, the block grants that would start in 2021. It also would eliminate funding for Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act has gone to about three dozen states over the past five years.”
