PRRI REPORT: Americans Side with Democrats on LGBTQ Issues

A newly released PRRI Report on support for LGBTQ protections reconfirms what we already know: the American people agree with Democrats and support Democratic legislative actions protecting the LGBTQ community from discrimination. This new data makes clear that Republicans’ attacks on LGBTQ rights are out of step with the majority of voters, including in states that will be key to taking back the White House and Senate in 2020.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • 71 percent of Americans, including 78 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of independents, support LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections.

    • “Americans remain widely supportive of broad nondiscrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Support among Democrats and independents has remained mostly constant . . .”

  • A majority of Americans, including 75 percent of Democrats and 56 percent of independents, oppose allowing small businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ Americans.

    • “Perspectives on religiously based service refusals have remained mostly constant among Democrats and independents since 2015 when 74% of Democrats and 59% of independents opposed religiously based service refusals.”

  • Americans in 2020 swing states overwhelmingly support Democrats’ efforts to extend nondiscrimination protections to LGBTQ Americans.
