WASHINGTON –  DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement:

“We congratulate both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders for finishing strong today in the District of Columbia after energizing voters across the country with smart, substantive primary campaigns worthy of the American people. Nearly 28 million people cast their ballots for Clinton and Sanders in our primaries – 2.7 million more than the top three Republican candidates combined. The reason we’re driving more people to the polls is simple: our candidates have shown throughout this campaign that they’re committed to fighting for the hopes, dreams and aspirations of hardworking families across the country. 
 
“The contrast with Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, couldn’t be more clear. His increasingly erratic, divisive and dangerous behavior on the campaign trail is proof that he has neither the temperament, nor the judgment to serve as commander in chief. At the end of the last Republican administration we were on the verge of economic collapse, losing 800,000 jobs a month as foreclosure signs littered our streets. Trump rooted for that crisis, hoping to profit as Americans lost their homes, jobs and savings. If elected, he would behave in the same way as he did then, only looking out for himself and those at the very top, damaging our standing in the world, and dragging our economy and our country backwards.
 
“Now that our 2016 primaries are officially at their end, Democrats are ready to unify and take on both Trump and the Republican Party that he represents. At our convention in July, we’re going to nominate a qualified, capable candidate who will build on the hard-won progress of the last seven years. After the Great Recession the last Republican Administration left behind, we’ve now had 75 consecutive months of private-sector job growth with more than 14 million new jobs created, and 20 million Americans now have access to health care under the Affordable Care Act. We must elect a Democrat as the next president of the United States to keep our country moving in the right direction, level the playing field, expand opportunity, and fight for a brighter future for all.”
