Trump’s Coming to New Jersey…Here’s What to Expect
January 27, 2020
We’ve been through this before. We know what to expect when Donald Trump lands in New Jersey tomorrow: More broken promises and empty rhetoric. Here’s a reminder of just some of the promises he’s made to New Jerseyans—and the actions that followed.
ATTACKS ON HEALTH CARE
Trump promised a health care win. Instead, he and Republicans are putting working New Jerseyans at risk of losing their health coverage, facing higher costs, and losing protections for preexisting conditions.
Promise: “We’re going to start winning. We don’t win anymore. […] We’re going to win on health care.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Lawrenceville NJ, 5/19/16]
Reality: If Republicans successfully overturn the Affordable Care Act in court, nearly 600,000 New Jerseyans could lose their health coverage, more than doubling the state’s number of uninsured residents. Without the ACA’s protections, as many as 3.8 million New Jerseyans with preexisting conditions could be denied coverage or charged higher rates.
CUTS TO MEDICARE, SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICAID
After promising New Jerseyans that he would preserve social safety net programs, Trump sought to cut billions from Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid—and said those cuts would be “the easiest of all things.”
Promise: “We’re going to be able to afford Social Security and Medicare again. I’m the only one that says that.” [Trump Campaign Rally, Lawrenceville NJ, 5/19/16]
Reality: Trump’s budgets have proposed slashing billions from Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Just last week, when asked if those programs could face funding cuts, Trump said, “At some point they will be. […] You know, that’s actually the easiest of all things.”
IGNORING THE OPIOID CRISIS
Trump promised that combating the opioid crisis would be a top priority. Instead, he’s tried to slash substance abuse funding to the bone—even as overdose deaths in New Jersey continue to skyrocket.
Promise: “The opioid crisis is an emergency, and I’m saying officially, right now, it is an emergency. It’s a national emergency. We’re going to spend a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of money on the opioid crisis.” [Trump Press Gaggle, Bedminster NJ, 8/10/17]
Reality: The Trump administration sought to cut more than half a billion dollars from substance abuse and mental health funding, proposed a 95% budget cut to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, and failed to recertify the opioid crisis as a public health emergency.
HIGHER TAXES
After promising to put working people first, Trump passed a tax scam that will end up taking money out of the pockets of hardworking New Jerseyans.
Promise: “First, we will cut taxes for all working and middle-class households in America.” [Trump Remarks, Edison NJ, 10/15/16]
Reality: Trump’s tax scam will hike taxes on nearly 1.2 million New Jerseyans by 2027 while handing massive giveaways to powerful corporations.
STIFFING SOUTH JERSEY WORKERS
As a businessman, Trump promised success and prosperity in Atlantic City. Instead, he left behind bankruptcies, eyesores, and unpaid wages.
Promise: “The opulence, the size, the everything is really what’s going to make the Taj Mahal the most successful hotel anywhere in the world.” [Nightline Interview, ABC News]
Reality: Three decades later, Trump still hasn’t paid the carpenters, electricians, plumbers, window installers and other contractors who built his failed Taj Mahal casino.
