Trump Made This Crisis Worse By Putting Politics First
May 20, 2020
Trump and his Republicans allies continue to make this crisis worse and put more Americans at risk by ignoring experts and putting politics ahead of science.
The White House muzzled the CDC and let politics, not science, drive its decisions.
CNN: “In interviews with CNN, CDC officials say their agency’s efforts to mount a coordinated response to the Covid-19 pandemic have been hamstrung by a White House whose decisions are driven by politics rather than science. The result has worsened the effects of the crisis, sources inside the CDC say, relegating the 73-year-old agency that has traditionally led the nation’s response to infectious disease to a supporting role.”
Trump’s allies are recruiting pro-Trump doctors to contradict the CDC and instead promote medical advice that benefits Trump politically.
Associated Press: “Republican political operatives are recruiting ‘extremely pro-Trump’ doctors to go on television to prescribe reviving the U.S. economy as quickly as possible, without waiting to meet safety benchmarks proposed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to slow the spread of the new coronavirus.”
Senate Republicans are on board too. Instead of addressing relief, they’ve moved on from coronavirus to Trump’s priorities for reelection.
ABC’s The Note: “President Donald Trump is making clear that he’s ready and eager to move on from COVID-19 as a political storyline. His allies in Congress and his campaign apparatus are helping him get there… The Senate is in session this week with no plans to work on an additional batch of pandemic relief. Republican senators are focusing on approving judges among other Trump appointments, while several committees dig in for investigations of Obama-Biden administration moves that Trump himself has been demanding.”
Wall Street Journal: “President Trump didn’t press Senate Republicans on Tuesday about specific ideas for the possible next round of coronavirus relief, instead focusing on the 2020 election and other concerns, adding to the uncertainty over the timing of any future deal with Democrats.”
Trump’s administration is ignoring economists, predicting a swift economic recovery as major problems still persist.
Washington Post: “President Trump’s senior advisers now predict swift economic recovery, despite warnings that major problems could persist”
Washington Post: “The White House’s rosy view of the U.S. economy’s trajectory clashes with the dire predictions of many mainstream economists, as well as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell.”
Trump denied the existence of a warning from the FDA and instead he continues to promote unproven coronavirus treatments.
CNN: “President Donald Trump continued Tuesday to make false and baseless claims about hydroxychloroquine, the anti-malaria drug he has repeatedly promoted and now says he is himself taking. At a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump falsely denied the existence of a Food and Drug Administration warning about the use of hydroxychloroquine for the coronavirus. And he claimed without any evidence that a study on veterans who were given the drug was conducted by political foes who had set out to hurt him.”
