A new analysis shows that a record 5.4 million Americans lost their health insurance during the pandemic as Trump tries to take health care away from millions more. This is the latest example of how Trump’s failed response to the coronavirus has had devastating consequences for Americans.

5.4 MILLION AMERICANS LOST HEALTH INSURANCE: A record number of Americans became uninsured because of job losses during the pandemic as Trump is fighting in court to take health care away from millions more.

New York Times: “The coronavirus pandemic stripped an estimated 5.4 million Americans of their health insurance between February and May, a stretch in which more adults became uninsured because of job losses than have ever lost coverage in a single year, according to a new analysis.”

MORE THAN 135,000 DEAD AND OVER 3 MILLION INFECTED because of Trump’s failure to contain coronavirus.

New York Times: “More than 3,379,900 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and at least 135,400 have died, according to a New York Times database.”

NEARLY 14 MILLION CHILDREN ARE GOING HUNGRY: Nearly three times more children are going hungry from the economic fallout of coronavirus than did during the Great Recession.

Huffington Post: “Nearly 14 million children in the United States went hungry in June, as the economic fallout from the pandemic continued to batter families. That’s an increase of more than 10 million since 2018, and nearly three times the number of children who went hungry during the Great Recession, according to an analysis of Census data released by the Hamilton Project on Thursday.”

110,000 SMALL BUSINESSES CLOSED FOR GOOD: Small businesses are struggling more than ever and it’s estimated that nearly 110,000 have been forced to close for good.

New York Times: “Researchers at Harvard believe the rates of business closures are likely to be even higher. They estimated that nearly 110,000 small businesses across the country had decided to shut down permanently between early March and early May, based on data collected in weekly surveys by Alignable, a social media network for small-business owners.”

33 MILLION RECEIVING UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS: Jobless Americans filed 2.3 million new claims in the first week of July, and in total 33 million were collecting unemployment benefits as of June 20.

CNBC: “Out-of-work Americans filed 2.3 million new claims for unemployment benefits last week, according to Labor Department data issued Thursday. … In all, nearly 33 million people were collecting unemployment benefits as of June 20, according to most recent Labor Department data — five times the previous high of 6.6 million hit during the Great Recession.”
