DNC on 57th Anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act
August 6, 2022
On the 57th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:
57 years ago today — thanks to the tireless work of civil rights heroes and everyday Americans — President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act into law.
For decades after, the cause of voting rights was bipartisan. Republicans and Democrats alike came together to ensure families like mine could finally make their voices heard.
Sadly, Republicans have walked away from their commitment to our sacred right to vote. Across the country, they are working to roll back voting rights and undermine our democracy. But Democrats remain steadfast. Today and always, we will stand up for every eligible American’s right to cast a vote and know that vote will be counted.
