Kim Reynolds Did What?
August 12, 2022
Yesterday, GOP Governor Kim Reynolds formally asked an Iowa court to allow her to implement a law banning abortions before many women know they are pregnant.
Make no mistake: Reynolds is setting a model for GOP lawmakers in other states to follow — putting the health and safety of women across America at risk.
Des Moines Register: “Gov. Kim Reynolds is formally asking a state court to reinstate a 2018 law banning abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, now that state and federal precedents protecting abortion rights have been overturned.”
Reynolds’ radical steps to ban abortion make clear that for Republicans, overturning Roe v. Wade was just the beginning. Now they are trying to implement a law that is so extreme that it was permanently blocked by a court in 2019.
Des Moines Register: “The 2018 ‘fetal heartbeat’ law would ban abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, when an embryo’s heart begins to develop and emit electrical impulses. The law was permanently blocked by a court injunction in 2019 and has never gone into effect.”
The Iowa GOP’s dangerous, anti-choice agenda cuts directly against Iowans’ views: 60 percent of Iowans believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases — yet Reynolds and Iowa Republicans are moving to take away a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions.
Des Moines Register: “Iowa Poll: Most Iowans support legal abortion; court rulings have paved way for more restrictions”
Let’s be clear: Abortion extremism is the GOP party line. But as last week’s ballot measure vote in Kansas made clear, Republicans’ abortion views are too extreme for the American people — and they will be held accountable for their dangerous agenda in November.
