ICYMI: The Kristi Noem Ethics Saga Continues
September 7, 2022
Kristi Noem is making headlines once again over her questionable ethics decisions, this time over her use of a taxpayer-funded airplane for political events. In case you missed it, let’s recap the ways that Noem is currently under investigation in her home state of South Dakota for possible ethics violations.
Kristi Noem faced investigation by South Dakota’s ethics board for not one, but TWO potential ethics violations — which indicate that Noem used the power of her office for personal and political gain.
Associated Press: “Noem, a potential 2024 White House contender, is under scrutiny from the state’s Government Accountability Board for allegations that she misused the powers of her office by interfering in her daughter’s application for a real estate appraiser license and flying on state-owned airplanes to political events. She has denied any wrongdoing.”
NBC News: “A South Dakota ethics board on Monday said it found sufficient information that Gov. Kristi Noem may have ‘engaged in misconduct’ when she intervened in her daughter’s application for a real estate appraiser license, and it referred a separate complaint over her state airplane use to the state’s attorney general for investigation.”
Both complaints, which were brought forward by the former Republican attorney general, have pressed forward despite Noem attempting to have them dismissed.
Associated Press: “The board’s three retired judges… voted unanimously to deny the governor’s requests to dismiss the complaints.”
Associated Press: “[Noem] is under scrutiny from the board after Jason Ravnsborg, the state’s former Republican attorney general, filed complaints that stemmed from media reports on Noem’s actions in office.”
Argus Leader: “An ethics board investigating a pair of complaints leveled against Gov. Kristi Noem voted to refer one of those complaints to the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office for investigation.”
And Noem isn’t just dodging ethics complaints, she recently ran away from South Dakota voters who confronted her over her support of the state’s near-total abortion ban.
The Daily Beast: “Within minutes of touching down for an appearance at a virtual golf facility in Sioux Falls, the top Republican in the state bailed upon being pressed by the women on their personal abortion stories—and the dangerous new reality after Roe v. Wade.”
