In observance of Religious Freedom Day, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Interfaith Council Co-Chairs Nadia Ahmad, Cindy Bass, Sarah Levin, and Johnnie Roebuck released the following statement:

“Dating back even before our nation’s founding, the United States has been a nation based on religious freedom, guaranteeing every American freedom of and from religion – so much so, that Thomas Jefferson and our nation’s founding fathers enshrined these rights in the First Amendment of our Constitution. Today, on Religious Freedom Day, we’re reminded of those values of tolerance and freedom that speak to our nation’s highest ideals. We also recommit ourselves to defending the constitutional principle of separation between religion and government, and ensuring everyone can practice their faith, or none at all, without fear, persecution, or oppression. 

“President Biden has made that commitment clear by championing religious freedom in his administration, including reestablishing the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, implementing increased funding for the Department of Homeland Security’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program to help protect religious institutions under threat, and establishing a new interagency group to better coordinate in combating antisemitism, Islamophobia, and related forms of bias and discrimination. Democrats know that our country’s diversity is our greatest strength and we stand united in our belief that all people should be treated equally regardless of their faith or lack thereof.”
