DNC Statement on Women’s History Month
March 1, 2023
In celebration of Women’s History Month, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Women’s Caucus Chair Lottie Shackelford released the following statement:
“Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the invaluable contributions of all women to our country, and to rededicate ourselves to continuing to build on all of the progress we have made. From the suffragettes who fought and won the right to vote with the 19th Amendment, to the Black women who were at the forefront of the civil rights movement and passing the Voting Rights Act and the trailblazers in all fields who have fought to shatter glass ceilings – undoubtedly, women’s contributions to our country are immeasurable. This year, we’re proud that Democratic women have achieved historic milestones, including the most Democratic female governors ever elected.
“The Biden-Harris administration is committed to defending and strengthening women’s rights, and lifting up their voices. President Biden reauthorized and strengthened the Violence Against Women Act, which includes expanded legal services for survivors and support for underserved communities, and signed a bill to end forced arbitration for workers who are victims of sexual assault and harrassment.
“President Biden has also made elevating women to key positions a hallmark of his administration, as he’s appointed the most diverse cabinet in our nation’s history and nominated more women to judicial appointments than any of his predecessors. And at a time when women’s fundamental rights to make their own health care decisions is under siege, this administration has taken executive action to defend choice.
“This Women’s History Month, we carry with us the incredible accomplishments of women everywhere, and recommit ourselves to the important work ahead to fight for the advancement and progress of all women and girls.”
