NEW: Trump: “Without Me There Would Be No 6 Weeks” Abortion Ban
May 17, 2023
In response to Donald Trump claiming credit for the cruelest abortion bans in the country, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:
“Donald Trump is on a mission to make sure everyone remembers he is responsible for the most extreme abortion bans in the country. From proudly appointing justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade to supporting a national abortion ban, Trump’s record speaks for itself: He is an anti-choice extremist who is hellbent on ripping away a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. Expect to hear more anti-choice extremism as Trump and the rest of the 2024 GOP field battle over who has the most MAGA anti-abortion record.”
Trump has been on a tirade for weeks, bragging about how he paved the way for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and opened the door for extreme abortion bans across the country.
Trump: “After 50 years of failure, with nobody coming even close, I was able to kill Roe v. Wade, much to the ‘shock’ of everyone … Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Without me the pro Life movement would have just kept losing. Thank you President TRUMP!!!”
Trump: “I’m the one that got rid of Roe v. Wade, and everybody said that was an impossible thing to do. I put on three Supreme Court justices. Very few people have had that privilege or honor.”
Trump: “We’ll pick something that’s going to be very, very good for pro-life … I’m going to be in there pushing.”
Trump on if he would sign a six-week national abortion ban: “I’m looking at all [options].”
Trump: “Getting rid of Roe v. Wade was an incredible thing for pro-life because it gave pro-life something to negotiate with. Pro-life had absolutely nothing, being stuck in Roe v. Wade, to negotiate with. … And look, everybody that was president wanted to get rid and tried to get rid of Roe v. Wade … For fifty years, this has been going on. I was able to do it, and I was very honored to do it.”
When asked whether he’d sign a national abortion ban if it came to his desk, Trump touted his MAGA judicial appointments and said “we’ will get it done on some level.”
Trump when asked if he would sign a national abortion ban: “I think we’ll get it done on some level, it could be on different levels, but we’re gonna get it done. I know the issue very well. I think I know the issue better than most and we will get that taken care of.”
This isn’t new for Trump: When he was still in office, Trump backed a bill national abortion ban that could have thrown doctors in jail for providing reproductive health care.
The Hill: “The Trump administration formally backed a House bill Monday that would ban abortions after 20 weeks. … It would make it a crime to perform or attempt an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the possibility of a fine, up to five years in prison or both.”
Trump’s years-long anti-abortion crusade doesn’t end there — he’s even called for punishing women who have an abortion.
Donald Trump: “There has to be some form of punishment [for women who have an abortion].”
