REMINDER: Chris Christie Is a Dangerous Anti-Abortion Extremist
June 13, 2023
Chris Christie has an extreme anti-abortion record — from endorsing a national abortion ban and eliminating grants for women’s health care clinics as governor of New Jersey to working with anti-choice extremist organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
As governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie endorsed a dangerous abortion ban and made it his mission to rip vital women’s health initiatives away.
The Hill: “New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), a potential 2016 contender, on Monday endorsed a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. ‘I am proud to be a pro-life Republican. I believe that every life is an individual gift from God, and that no life is disposable,’ Christie said in the statement to the Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-abortion group.”
NJ.com: “Since 2010, Christie has successfully trimmed the $7.5 million in women’s healthcare funding, mostly with vetoes. He first argued that the funding was ‘duplicative’ and that the state couldn’t afford it, but said during his presidential bid in 2015 that cut reflected his socially conservative values.”
Bloomberg: “Chris Christie, who last week prodded Republicans to drop anti-abortion rhetoric to appeal to more voters, has steadily weakened access to the procedure in New Jersey. … The second-term governor’s annual funding cuts for women’s health services have prompted at least six clinics to close since 2010, according to lawmakers.”
Following the overturn of Roe v. Wade, Christie made light of Americans’ concerns about access to reproductive care and joined anti-choice extremist organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America in meetings with Republican governors across the country.
Breitbart: “Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Sunday reacted to Kansas voters rejecting an amendment that would have allowed the state legislature to strengthen abortion restrictions or even ban the procedure outright. Christie argued that the Kansas vote showed that the ‘manufactured hysteria’ from Democrats over the Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that the Constitution does not include a right to abortion had been ‘undercut.’”
Axios: “The president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America told Axios on Friday that in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, her group will work to restrict abortion ‘in every state and in every legislature, including the Congress.’ … Dannenfelser said she’s working with governors and state legislatures in dozens of states. As we spoke, she said she was getting a call from former Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has been working with her to coordinate efforts.”
