DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, DNC Women’s Caucus Chair Lottie Shackelford, and DNC Native Caucus Chair Clara Pratte released the following statement to recognize the anniversary of the signing of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA): 

“29 years ago, members of Congress, with the leadership of then-Senator Joe Biden, came together to pass the historic Violence Against Women Act to address domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault. Over the last three decades, instances of domestic violence have declined significantly thanks in part to the protections offered by VAWA and its subsequent reauthorizations. While VAWA was a significant step forward in putting an end to the scourge of domestic violence, it is our duty to continue forging a safer country for future generations of women and girls. 

“President Biden ran on a commitment to pass the long-overdue VAWA Reauthorization Act, and thanks to his leadership and the tireless advocacy of activists, survivors, and allies, today we also celebrate the VAWA Reauthorization Act which built upon the legacy of this historic law. This bipartisan reauthorization strengthens services for survivors, improves violence prevention, and allows Tribal courts to prosecute non-Native abusers on Tribal lands. On this anniversary, we remain committed to building upon this law to put an end to the epidemic of domestic violence so that all Americans can live their lives safe from abuse and violence.”
