In response to Donald Trump’s latest call to terminate the Affordable Care Act, DNC National Press Secretary Sarafina Chitika released the following statement:

“When Donald Trump was in the White House, he tried and failed to repeal the Affordable Care Act and rip away its health care coverage from more than 40 million Americans. Now, voters are watching as Trump and MAGA Republicans double down on his dangerous plan that could kick middle class families off their health care coverage and subject as many as 135 million Americans with preexisting conditions to discrimination from insurance companies — all to line the pockets of greedy health care executives. The GOP has made it clear that health care is on the line next November, and voters will once again turn out to reject the MAGA agenda and support President Biden’s promise to make coverage affordable and accessible for all Americans.”

Trump doubled down on his plan to “terminate” the Affordable Care Act, which is providing over 40 million hardworking Americans with health care who couldn’t otherwise afford it.

The Messenger: “Former President Donald Trump said he is ‘seriously looking at alternatives’ to Obamacare in a new post on his social media platform Truth Social. He also called it a ‘low point for the Republican Party’ that lawmakers failed to ‘terminate’ the health insurance program established by the Affordable Care Act. According to the latest figures this year, more than 40 million Americans rely on the program for those who can’t afford private plans.”

Trump’s plan to kill the Affordable Care Act would devastate the lives of millions of Americans who depend on it — and it’s the latest out-of-touch proposal from Trump’s 2024 campaign.

Jon Favreau: “If Trump wins, 40 million people could lose their health care, and insurance companies would get to deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. If Biden wins, that…won’t happen.”

Washington Post: “But what’s clear is that an effort to ‘terminate’ Obamacare is not something Americans are pining for. Not only were the GOP’s efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare during Trump’s term historically unpopular, but the law also appears to have gotten more popular since then. … And when politicians talk of ending health insurance for tens of millions of Americans, dropping coverage of preexisting conditions and cutting Obamacare’s Medicaid funding, things get even dicier.”

KFF Poll: 64% believe it is “very important” insurance companies continue to be prohibited from charging sick people more – including 55% of Republicans. 

NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll: Eight out of 10 U.S. adults say all Americans have a basic right to health care coverage.

Bryan Bennett: “Per our October @NavigatorSurvey research, repealing the ACA (and January 6) remain the top concerns about Trump’s first term as president” 

If Trump takes power and repeals the Affordable Care Act, as many as 135 million people with preexisting conditions could be discriminated against by insurance companies if their protections are ripped away from them. 

Center for American Progress: “According to new estimates from the Center for American Progress, 135 million people under age 65, or about half of nonelderly people, have a preexisting condition that an insurer could use to discriminate against them if they ever sought coverage through the individual market in the absence of ACA protections.”

KFF Poll: 72% believe it is “very important” the ACA provision protecting preexisting conditions stay in place – including 62% of Republicans.

Trump has been hellbent on ending the Affordable Care Act for years, and when he was in office, he came within one vote in Congress of achieving his goal. 

NBC News: “Trump approved a surprise decision to push for the complete elimination of the Affordable Care Act in the courts. If it succeeds, millions of Americans will lose their private insurance or Medicaid coverage and the health care system would be thrown into chaos.”

NPR: “The very day President Trump was sworn in — Jan. 20, 2017 — he signed an executive order instructing administration officials ‘to waive, defer, grant exemptions from, or delay’ implementing parts of the Affordable Care Act, while Congress got ready to repeal and replace President Obama’s signature health law.” 

Trump isn’t the only 2024 Republican trying to rip away health care coverage from millions of Americans who rely on it.

HuffPost: “As a Republican serving in the U.S. House, [DeSantis] was part of a far-right caucus that voted against the first ACA repeal bill that leadership brought to the floor because, DeSantis and his allies said, it didn’t undo enough of the law’s protections for people with pre-existing conditions. GOP leaders eventually put forward a more aggressive repeal. DeSantis and his colleagues voted yes on that one, but it failed in the Senate.” 

Politico: “Despite the fact that millions of people had enrolled in Obamacare, the health law remains a ‘failure on a whole number of levels’ and should be repealed, Christie said. But, he added, Republicans must also offer a concrete replacement. The conversation, he said ‘must start from a position of repeal.’”

Reuters: “Governor Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas has signed legislation that will end by 2017 the state’s innovative but controversial adaptation of the Affordable Care Act, which has provided nearly 190,000 residents with health coverage.”

HealthInsurance.org: “In late 2017, Burgum and 19 other Republican governors wrote a letter to Congress, urging lawmakers to repeal the ACA.” 

Let’s not forget that Trump’s top minion MAGA Mike Johnson has attempted to deny access to affordable care from hardworking Americans for years and he voted against the Inflation Reduction Act, which is lowering the cost of prescription drugs and capping the cost of insulin for seniors on Medicare at $35 a month. 

Press Release, Office of Congressman Mike Johnson: “U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson joined 11 other freshman members of Congress in a letter published Tuesday by Fox News urging the U.S. Senate to act on repealing the Affordable Care Act.”

The Hill: “As chair of the conservative Republican Study Commission, he has backed health care proposals that the GOP has espoused for years, including a repeal of the Affordable Care Act.”

Daily Beast: “Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), a member of House GOP leadership, said ‘I assume’ Republicans would move to repeal [the Inflation Reduction Act], but indicated it was still early.”

And Republican presidential hopefuls have attacked Medicaid expansion in their own states — leaving millions of Americans uninsured, forced to pay outrageously high out-of-pocket costs, or without lifesaving care.
