REMINDER: Republicans Refuse To Fund Border Security
January 3, 2024
As MAGA Mike Johnson and House Republicans head to the southern border, DNC National Press Secretary Sarafina Chitika released the following statement:
“House Republicans called it quits early over the holidays, heading home for some R&R after a year of failing to pass any meaningful legislation to benefit Americans instead of getting back to the negotiating table to strike a good-faith agreement on border security. President Biden has put forth commonsense solutions for our border — from funding additional agents, to hiring more asylum officers, to deploying new technologies to detect fentanyl coming into the U.S. — while House Republican proposals could have jeopardized funding and reduced the number of CBP agents and officers at the border. While MAGA Republicans line up behind a presidential frontrunner whose idea of immigration reform is mass deportations and Muslim bans, President Biden is continuing to forge a path to a bipartisan agreement that would deploy real resources, secure the border, and ensure safe, legal pathways for migrants.”
Trump’s MAGA minions in Congress proposed a budget that could get rid of up to 2,000 Customs and Border Patrol agents and slash the budget of the Drug Enforcement Agency — threatening our national security and potentially allowing illegal drugs into our country.
The Hill: “Bates claimed that the bill, if enacted, would result in the termination of 2,000 Border Patrol agents, slash the budget of the Drug Enforcement Agency and allow 150,000 pounds of cocaine, 900 pounds of fentanyl, 2,000 pounds of heroin and 17,000 pounds of methamphetamine into the U.S.”
Let’s not forget the MAGA House majority rejected President Biden’s budget proposal, which included bolstering law enforcement with more funding and hundreds of new Border Patrol agents.
USA Today: “In his proposed 2024 budget, the president would allocate nearly $25 billion to U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It’s a nearly $800 million increase over the 2023 enacted level.”
Government Executive: “Border Patrol is in line for a whopping 17% funding boost, which includes the funding for 300 new Border Patrol agents that the Biden administration had repeatedly stressed as necessary to handle the record-high numbers of migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.”
And MAGA House Republicans have even called to defund the Department of Homeland Security.
