Ahead of Dobbs Anniversary, DNC Hosts Mini Timmaraju, Red State Democrats to Hold Trump Accountable for Abortion Restrictions Across the Country
June 21, 2024
Ahead of the two-year anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, the DNC hosted a press call with Mini Timmaraju, President and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All; Alabama State Rep. Marilyn Lands; Kansas Democratic Party Chair Jeanna Repass; and Idaho Democratic Party Chair Lauren Necochea to slam Donald Trump for overturning Roe v. Wade, ripping away reproductive freedom for millions of women across the country, and having promised to be ‘leading the charge’ in banning abortion nationwide.
Because of Trump, millions of women in states across the country have fallen victim to draconian abortion bans that put their health and lives at risk. Donald Trump has emboldened MAGA Republicans to implement his extreme agenda that endangers women. If Trump returns to the White House, he will implement a national ban that will affect everyone in blue, purple, and red states alike.
Watch individual remarks and read highlights from the press call below:
[1:00]: “I’ve got to keep repeating that this is the America that Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans built. Trump cemented the anti-abortion majority on the court who handed down the Dobbs decision and opened the door for abortion bans that are putting pregnant people’s health, well-being, and lives on the line. Make no mistake: if Republicans win majorities in Congress and Donald Trump, god forbid, locks in the presidency, a national abortion ban is next,” said Mini Timmaraju, President and CEO, Reproductive Freedom for All. “Anti-abortion attacks we’re seeing in red states offer a preview of the dangerous, extreme agenda that Trump and his allies, including his vice presidential contenders, intend to take nationwide. We know who the champions we can count on to protect reproductive freedom are. From day one, it’s been President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris who have fought for us.”
[2:38]: “Now women in our state and others, because of the draconian abortion ban, are being forced to travel out of state to receive the same care that I depended on because today they have fewer rights than I did when I was forced to make one of the most difficult decisions of my life,” said Alabama State Rep. Marilyn Lands. “The past two years have proven that overturning Roe v. Wade wasn’t the end – it’s just the beginning of Republicans’ assault on reproductive health care. These attacks are harming so many women and exasperating long-standing health inequalities. Because Trump overturned Roe v. Wade, women are struggling to access the very basic care they need – especially women living in our rural communities, where Trump has supercharged a health care workforce shortage and created a real medical crisis.”
[3:29]: “Make no mistake: if Donald Trump wins a second term as president, all of the work that Democrats have done to protect abortion in Kansas will be for nothing because Trump is hellbent on implementing a national abortion ban that would overturn the will of our voters,” said Jeanna Repass, Kansas Democratic Party Chair. “It’s critical that we mobilize voters in every single state – no matter if they swing red, or blue, or purple – we have to reelect President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. They are the only candidates in this race committed to defending and restoring reproductive freedoms. Under another Trump presidency, women will only experience more suffering and attacks at the hands of MAGA Republicans.”
[1:15]: “Idaho is a terrifying cautionary tale for our nation. When Republicans seize power, they cater to the fringe, anti-abortion hardliners, no matter the human suffering,” said Lauren Necochea, Idaho Democratic Party Chair. “Since we lost protections from a lower court ruling for medical emergencies, Idaho’s largest health system has been airlifting patients with pregnancy complications out of state every two weeks. Lacking any compassion, Republican leaders went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to maintain this horrific reality. Now, the same Supreme Court justices that overturned Roe are preparing to hand down their decision on whether or not women across the country have the right to emergency reproductive care due to Idaho’s MAGA Republican politicians. … The fact that millions of women have to wait in terror for the Supreme Court to determine if they have the right to seek the care that could save their own life is reason enough to never allow Trump to retake the White House. We need to fight back.”
