Thanks to Democratic special election victories in Virginia’s open Senate District 32 and House District 26, Democrats will maintain the majorities in both chambers of the Virginia legislature
Washington, DC – Today, the Democratic National Committee congratulated Democratic candidates Del. Kannan Srinivasan in Virginia Senate District 32 and JJ Singh in Virginia House District 26 for their victories in today’s Virginia legislative special elections – the first major elections since November. Thanks to these victories, the Virginia Senate and House will remain Democratic backstops to fight back against the extremism of Donald Trump and Glenn Youngkin.
“The DNC congratulates Democratic candidates Del. Kannan Srinivasan in the open Virginia Senate District 32 seat and JJ Singh in the open Virginia House District 26 seat for their victories in tonight’s crucial special elections. As we face increasing extremism at the federal level, it’s more important than ever for Democrats to fight back in the states, build local power, and win elections up and down the ballot,” said DNC Deputy Executive Director Roger Lau. “In Virginia, everything was at stake – including the state codification of Roe v. Wade, an expansion of voting rights, and protections for marriage equality. These two tremendous candidates will continue Virginia’s economic growth and stand as a backstop against the extremism of Donald Trump and Glenn Youngkin.”
“Today, voters in Loudoun County once again rejected Republican extremism by electing Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh. Their victories ensure that we maintain our majority in the General Assembly so we can continue passing legislation that benefits all Virginians while rejecting harmful policies,” said Democratic Party of Virginia Chair Susan Swecker.
Democrats in both of these special elections fought to maintain Democratic majorities in the Virginia Senate and House, where these majorities are close to moving three constitutional amendments through the legislative process, including the codification of Roe v. Wade, an expansion of voting rights, and protections for marriage equality. With Donald Trump soon to take office, victories for Del. Kannan Srinivasan and JJ Singh are critical to keep Virginia’s economy thriving and safeguarding fundamental rights in the Commonwealth.
The DNC invests year round in every state party, including the Democratic Party of Virginia, to help with operations, voter protection services, data resources, and tech support.
