NEW: Democrats Fight Back Against MAGA Republicans’ Voter Suppression in Georgia

DNC files Amicus Brief in voter protection case in Georgia
Known as Donald Trump’s “Pitbulls,” the Georgia State Election Board continues to attack and silence voters
Today, the Democratic National Committee filed an amicus brief in a case against the Georgia State Election Board, part of the DNC’s continued efforts to protect Georgians from Republicans’ shameless attacks on their voting rights. The brief takes on MAGA Republicans on the State Election Board as they try to enact the “hand count” rule and the “reasonable inquiry” rule – which would let local officials delay election results and certification when the outcome doesn’t suit Republicans.
We are 633 days away from the midterm elections and the DNC is taking nothing for granted in our fight to defend our democracy and ensure that ballots are counted fairly, quickly, and accurately.
Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“To the great annoyance of MAGA Republicans in Georgia, the DNC is making it clear: there are no off-days when it comes to protecting democracy. Politicians don’t decide our elections – voters do. As Republican officials in Georgia have made clear, these new rules were made up by Republicans in the run-up to November’s election and don’t make our elections fairer or stronger, they are an attempt to sow distrust in our elections. Democrats are standing on the side of Georgians – the only people who should decide their state’s elections. ”

Additional background below on the DNC’s legal actions:
- Shortly before the November 2024 election, the State Election Board issued several new and unlawful rules that threatened to upend longstanding election processes.
- Two of the rules—known as the “Hand Count” and “Reasonable Inquiry” rules– each violate the Election Code and exceed the Board’s statutory authority.
- The DNC brought multiple lawsuits challenging these rules because these rules would result in election returns from particular counties or precincts being improperly delayed. The DNC’s cases were all stayed pending the outcome of this case.
- Such delays introduce opportunities for bad-faith actors to claim that fraud has affected election results, which undermines public confidence in our election system.
- The court should affirm the trial court’s decision that each of these seven rules violates Georgia law.
