Day 1 of Trump’s Shutdown: Job Market in Peril as Private Companies Cut 32,000 Jobs in September
October 1, 2025

Newly released data from ADP reveals private US companies shed 32,000 jobs, the biggest loss since March 2023. The construction sector lost 5,000 jobs in September, the largest decline since 2020. ADP also revised down August’s employment growth of 54,000 to a loss of 3,000.
Yesterday, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that there are fewer job openings than unemployed workers, and the hiring rate for the trade and transportation industry is at a 12-year low. Americans who have been struggling with high inflation and rising prices now have fewer job opportunities thanks to Trump.
Conveniently, Trump’s White House is choosing to suspend the monthly BLS jobs reports while they shut down the government, preventing policymakers and businesses from evaluating crucial economic data to inform their decisions. It’s obvious why the White House is using Trump’s shutdown as an excuse to halt the jobs report: Trump has taken a wrecking ball to the job market, and the data is damning.
In response to the September ADP Jobs Report, DNC Communications Director Rosemary Boeglin released the following statement:
“Donald Trump shut down the government so that he didn’t have to shield millions of Americans from skyrocketing health care premiums, even though he just spent 10x as much in taxpayer dollars on handouts to billionaires. Now, his White House is using the Trump Shutdown as an excuse to bar the release of the September jobs report, which is expected to show Trump’s economy and labor market in continued crisis. Donald Trump doesn’t care about working families — he only cares about Donald Trump and billionaire donors.”
Donald Trump has trashed the U.S. economy. While Trump’s claims that he’s “solved inflation,” costs keep climbing. It’s no wonder that a staggering 72% of Americans say the economy is in poor or fair condition, and 45-32% of voters say the economy has gotten worse under Trump’s watch. That’s not the only warning sign for Trump: Over 60% of Americans disapprove of Donald Trump’s handling of the economy, and 75% of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track, including a majority of Republicans.
