Trump on the 2020 Election: “I Had To Win It. I Needed It For My Own Ego.”

During a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast today, Donald Trump aired his years-old grievances about losing the 2020 election, saying, “I had to win it. I needed it for my own ego.” While his economy tanks and the job market sheds jobs left and right, Trump is focused on rehashing his election loss and licking his wounds. Just last week, he directed his Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, to participate in a raid of the Fulton County election office in an attempt to legitimize his unfounded investigation into the 2020 election.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

“Donald Trump doesn’t care about helping working families or delivering on his campaign promises to bring down prices. He only cares about enriching himself and using his power to boost his own ego. Working families are drowning under Trump’s economy, which is worsening by the day, as prices on groceries, rent, and gas soar, and the job market continues to worsen. But rather than prioritize the people he was elected to serve, Trump is focused on cozying up to his billionaire friends and donors, raiding county election offices for his baseless investigation into the 2020 election, and doubling down on his reckless economic policies. Over five years later, everyday Americans don’t want to hear about the lies Trump tells himself about his blistering election loss: They want lower prices and good-paying jobs, and Democrats are prepared to deliver on those promises.”

Today’s Challenger, Gray & Christmas layoff report showed 108,435 job cuts in January, the highest January total since 2009, and employers announced a meager 5,306 planned hires, the lowest January on record. The manufacturing sector is similarly in shambles, as a new ADP report showed that the sector lost 8,000 jobs in January while payrolls fell for small businesses with between 20 and 49 employees. It’s no wonder Trump is 18 points underwater on his handling of the economy and 29 points underwater on handling the cost of living.

Just last night, when asked why his economic poll numbers have plummeted, and Americans are fed up with his economy, he simply said, “They should be great…I don’t know.”
