ICYMI: 1.3 Million Americans Forced to Go Without Health Insurance After GOP Spikes Premiums
February 6, 2026

Donald Trump and Republicans continue to refuse to extend lifesaving ACA premium tax credits, resulting in health care premiums skyrocketing by an average of 114%. Now, new data shows that 1.3 million people who got their health care on the ACA marketplace dropped their coverage, and the number is expected to rise as Americans who have higher premiums lose their coverage. For some Americans, their health insurance premiums are higher than their mortgage payments.
Bottom Line: Thanks to Trump and Republicans’ billionaires-first agenda, working families are being forced to choose between food on the table, a roof over their heads, or lifesaving health care. While Republicans put working families last, Democrats are fighting back to extend the enhanced ACA premium tax credits and protect Americans’ health.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: 8 takeaways from Rick Jackson’s surprise entry into Georgia governor’s race
[Greg Bluestein, Tia Mitchell, Patricia Murphy, Adam Beam, 2/4/2026]
“Democrats are pointing to a drop in enrollment as proof that expired tax credits, which were designed to make the program more affordable, are forcing Georgians to drop health insurance coverage altogether.
“According to new data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, roughly 200,000 Georgians who had ACA plans last year have dropped their coverage, a 14% decline. That happened as expiring tax credits meant a jump in premiums for most enrollees.
“Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin highlighted the drop and blamed Republicans for letting the tax credits expire.
“‘While tens of thousands of Georgians lose their health care due to Republican inaction and indifference, Democrats are fighting back to fix this affordability emergency,’ Martin said. ‘It’s time for Republicans to grow a backbone and stop raising costs on people in Georgia.’”
Delaware Public Media: Affordable Care Act enrollment drops in Delaware
[Joe Irizarry, 2/3/2026]
“According to Delaware’s Department of Insurance, ACA enrollment in Delaware dropped to 44,663, about a 15.6% decrease from last year.
“And there’s a chance it can slip further….
“‘This is the first time we’ve seen a decline in many years. Since the enhanced advanced premium tax credits went into effect, enrollment doubled in Delaware, so that 92% of policyholders that accessed those premium savings really had to take a hard look about their coverage of whether they could afford it in the future,’ said Haas.”
Indianapolis Star: Indiana sees 4th highest drop in Obamacare enrollees after subsidies expire
[Kayla Dwyer, 2/2/2026]
“With the expiration of federal Affordable Care Act subsidies, nearly 60,000 Hoosiers have decided not to sign up for this health insurance option this year ― the 4th highest year-over-year percentage decline in the nation, according to federal data….
“Indiana’s 16% drop was among the highest, behind North Carolina, Ohio and West Virginia. There are now about 300,000 Hoosiers enrolled in the marketplace. These numbers could fluctuate in the coming months as new premiums hit. …
“The Kaiser Family Foundation estimated that the expiration of these enhanced subsidies would mean premiums will go up an average of 114%, or more than doubling. Some of the most severe impacts are expected to hit elderly beneficiaries just above the 400% line.”
