ICYMI: Trump Says He is “Very Proud” of the Failing “Trump Economy”

In his pre-Super Bowl interview with NBC News yesterday, Donald Trump took complete ownership of his disastrous economy, saying that he is “very proud of it” and that we are currently in the “Trump economy.” National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett similarly said this morning that “it’s definitely Trump’s economy.” Meanwhile, everyday Americans living in the “Trump economy” are experiencing skyrocketing prices on groceries, housing, and gas, amid sky-high layoffs.

Here’s what the “Trump economy” really means:

  • In 2025, American families paid approximately $2,120 more due to inflation, including an additional $150 on groceries and $123 on electricity costs.
  • Nearly half of Americans carry credit card debt, and almost 1-in-4 say they don’t think they will ever be able to pay off their debt.
  • U.S.-based employers announced 108,435 job cuts in January, the highest January total since the Great Recession in 2009 — and 8,000 manufacturing jobs were cut in January, continuing the trend of manufacturing losses every month since Trump’s term began.
  • Trump’s administration is asking Americans to “not retire” or “start working a year earlier,” as his Big Ugly Bill gives permanent tax cuts to billionaires and adds $3.4 trillion to the deficit.
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that the Trump accounts are a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security,” while the average American worker has less than $1,000 saved for retirement.
  • First-time home purchases sank to record lows, down payments rose to record-highs in 2025, and the median age of first-time homebuyers climbed to a record high of 40.
  • After Trump and Republicans refused to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, more than 20 million Americans are seeing their premiums increase by an average of 114%.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is ‘very proud’ of exacerbating Americans’ struggles to make ends meet. Trump’s disastrous policies have forced working families to stretch their budgets to afford groceries, gas, housing, and health care. Trump continues to cash in on the presidency, fighting tooth and nail for himself and his billionaire friends by giving massive handouts to the ultrawealthy and demanding that the taxpayers pay him $10 billion. The ‘Trump Economy’ only benefits you if you are rich and powerful, while everyday Americans are being left out to dry.”

Americans are fed up with Trump’s economy, with a whopping near-60% — the highest of either of his terms — disapproving of Trump’s handling of the economy. Consumer confidence in January also fell to its lowest level since 2014, as a majority of Americans believe the economy is somewhat or much worse off since Trump took office. Meanwhile, Trump is doubling down on his disastrous economic policies and is even demanding that his Attorney General Pam Bondi and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent give him $10 billion of taxpayer money if he wins his lawsuit against the IRS.
