Donald Trump Continues To Move the Goalposts on His Failing Economy
February 23, 2026

Donald Trump has fallen short on his promises to everyday Americans and he continues to move the goalposts for his disastrous economy.
FIRST: On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly made economic promises, saying, “Starting on Day One, we will end inflation and make America affordable again.”
THEN: Last year, JD Vance said, “I think 2026 is going to be the year where this economy really takes off,” and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed, “We should think that 2025 was setting the table, 2026 is going to be a bountiful year.”
NOW: On Friday, Trump said, “You’ll start to see the results in a year from now.”
Americans need economic relief now. American households paid an estimated $2,120 more last year for Trump’s inflation as they took on 95% of the cost of Trump’s illegal tariffs, and companies announced more than a million job cuts last year, making 2025 the worst year for job growth since 2003, excluding recessions.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Trump promised to ‘make America affordable again’ on ‘Day One’ — we are now more than one year into his second term and there are no signs of his promised ‘Golden Age.’ Instead, working families are being crushed by rising costs and massive job cuts, and are bracing for even higher prices as Trump doubles down on his inflationary tariffs. Americans can’t wait any longer for economic relief, and they are sick and tired of Trump’s excuses.”
A day before his State of the Union address, most Americans have soured on Trump, saying the country is worse off than a year ago, and that the state of the union is not strong. A whopping 59% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy, the highest of either term, and only 32% approve of how he has dealt with inflation.
Trump’s overall job approval rating is a staggering 36%, and among political independents, Trump’s approval rating has dropped 15 points over the past year to 26%, the lowest it’s been in either of his terms. Just 32% of Americans now say that Trump has had the right priorities, while 68% say he hasn’t paid enough attention to the country’s most important problems. At the same time, Americans say, 61% to 38%, that Trump’s policies will move the country in the wrong direction rather than the right one.
