ICYMI: From Red to Blue Districts, Local Democrats Are Overperforming and Winning Big Against Trump and Republicans’ Toxic Agenda

On Tuesday, voters turned out to elect Democratic candidates who are focused on lowering costs, protecting health care, and building a more affordable America for working families.

  • In Arkansas, Alex Holladay won the Arkansas House District 70 election by nearly 15 points, a seat that Democrats have not held for over a decade.
  • In the Arkansas Supreme Court election, Democratic-aligned candidate John Adams clinched a major overperformance of 22 points
  • In Massachusetts, Democrat Vanna Howard won her race in the Senate District 1 special election. After Tuesday night, Democrats have now overperformed or won in 253 out of 283 key elections since Donald Trump took office.

The bottom line: In red, blue, and purple districts alike, Democrats are overperforming and winning back-to-back as we build Democratic power across all levels of government to ensure everyday Americans have strong leaders fighting for them.

NBC News: Democrats have flipped 9 seats in state legislative special elections under Trump while Republicans are at 0

By Allan Smith

  • Democrat Alex Holladay prevailed in a special election on Tuesday for a state legislative seat in Arkansas, marking the ninth time since President Donald Trump took office last year that the party has flipped control of a state legislative seat in a special election.
  • In that same time, Republicans have not flipped a single state seat controlled by Democrats.
  • Holladay’s victory came after Democrats, since the start of 2025, have flipped Republican-held seats in special elections in Iowa, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Georgia and Texas. When adding in the flips from last fall’s off-year elections in New Jersey and Virginia, Democrats have flipped 27 total seats controlled by Republicans, while Republicans are still searching for their first flip, according to data compiled by the Downballot.
  • Heather Williams, president of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, said a common thread between the candidates who have been able to flip Republican-held seats in these special elections is that “they are not running on a sole anti-Trump agenda.”
  • “They’re looking for a path forward,” she said, adding, “The other through-line is that under no stretch of the imagination is the unpopularity of this Republican Party solely about Democratic voters and blue states.”
