As Oil Hits $100 a Barrel, Trump Says His Top Priorities Are an Unpopular Foreign War and Taking Over Elections

In a recent interview with CNN, Donald Trump said his top priorities are waging his illegal and reckless war of choice in Iran — which has already claimed the lives of seven U.S. servicemembers — and implementing restrictive voting laws across the country.

In the interview, Trump said, “I want the SAVE America Act. It is more important than everything else we’re working on other than the war,” and he suggested he wasn’t worried about rising gas prices.

After Trump spent his weekend golfing, U.S. oil hit $100 a barrel this morning and stocks plunged. The average price of gas reached $3.48 a gallon — a nearly 17% increase since Trump started his war in Iran — and the most commonly encountered price for diesel has jumped from $3.69 per gallon a week ago to $4.99 per gallon today.

Nearly 70% of Americans believe Trump is focused on the wrong priorities and has failed to pay attention to lowering costs, as Americans continue to face soaring prices and the job market continues its freefall. Nearly 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump’s actions in Iran, which are costing American taxpayers an estimated $1 billion a day. And 70% of Americans believe that Trump’s economic policies are driving up costs, including a majority of Republicans.

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

“Donald Trump is out of touch with everyday Americans. Working families are scraping the bottom of their bank accounts just to afford basic necessities, from gas to groceries to health care, and the economy is shedding jobs at record pace. But Trump is only focused on a deadly and costly war with Iran that Americans don’t support. Democrats are fighting every day to bring down costs and safeguard Americans’ fundamental rights and freedoms, while Trump plays games with American lives.”

While Trump focuses on his war in Iran and passing restrictive voting laws, working families are struggling to find good-paying jobs and afford rising costs. The latest jobs report revealed that the U.S. lost 92,000 jobs in February and the unemployment rate bumped up to 4.4%. Since Trump imposed his disastrous tariffs, the total job gains from May 2025 to February 2026 are -19,000. And now, as a result of Trump’s war in Iran, gas prices are the latest sticker shock in Trump’s economy, with the average price for a gallon of gasoline rising to $3.48 nationwide.
