Trump and Vance Brag About Their Failing Administration as Majority of Americans Say They’re Focused on the Wrong Priorities
March 17, 2026

As Donald Trump continues to wage his unpopular war of choice with Iran and double down on his disastrous economic policies, JD Vance yesterday boasted about the administration’s record, saying “we actually tackle the problems the American people have been confronting.”
Americans, however, disagree with Vance’s assessment: Americans increasingly believe that Trump and Republicans have the wrong priorities, with only a quarter of Americans believing that Trump and Republicans are focused on lowering the cost of living and inflation, even though most Americans say that is among their top concerns.
Everyday Americans are struggling to afford high prices on everything, including gas, groceries, and rent. Since Trump started his reckless war with Iran, the average price of a gallon of gasoline has spiked to $3.79, and the price of diesel has surpassed a record $5 per gallon. And a new report shows that working families will pay over $2,500 in additional costs this year due to Trump’s tariffs — a 44% increase from the $1,745 families shelled out last year.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump and JD Vance have wrecked the economy and gotten the country into another deadly and costly war, and now they have the nerve to boast about their failed administration. Under their leadership, working families continue to struggle to put a roof over their heads, food on the table, and gas in the tank. No matter how many times they claim they’re fighting for working families, their billionaire-first record says otherwise. Democrats are fighting every day to lower costs for working families, while Trump and Vance sell them out in favor of their own interests.”
Trump and Vance’s economy is in shambles. Core PCE inflation is up nearly 3% compared to a year ago, while fourth-quarter GDP was revised down to just 0.7% growth and the economy lost 92,000 jobs in February, with the private sector cutting 86,000 — the largest drop since December 2020.
To make matters worse, mortgage rates are rising again, as homes sit on the market for longer periods of time due to high prices. Meanwhile, Republicans are threatening to block a bipartisan housing bill championed by Senate Democrats, as Trump reportedly told House Speaker Mike Johnson that “no one gives a [bleep] about housing.”
