DNC Statement on Juneteenth

DNC Chair Ken Martin, DNC Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta, DNC Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation Reyna Walters-Morgan, DNC Associate Chair Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and DNC Black Caucus Chair Virgie Rollins issued the following joint statement on Juneteenth:

“Juneteenth commemorates the moment when the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas to free the last remaining enslaved African Americans, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. On this day, we come together to celebrate the jubilee, remember the strength and resilience of the Black community, and reaffirm our commitment to eliminate discrimination and bigotry wherever it is found.

“Our work continues as long as the last remnants of Jim Crow seek to curtail voting rights and dilute the political power of Black Americans. And our work continues as long as we approach, but do not yet reach, the promised day when liberty and justice become a reality for all Americans. As Democrats celebrate Juneteenth, we once more resolve to fight for civil rights and dismantle the oppressive legacy of racism once and for all.”
