As Donald Trump continues to wage his deadly and costly war with Iran with no off-ramp or deal in sight, Americans are paying the price at the pump. The national average price for a gallon of gasoline today is $4.01 — higher than it has ever been at this point in the summer. Americans have already spent $60 billion more on gas since Trump started his war — over $500 in additional costs per family.
REMINDER: Earlier this year, Energy Secretary Chris Wright claimed that gas would very likely be back under $3 a gallon by summer.
Just yesterday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claimed that the country is “more affordable” under Trump. In reality, Trump’s war with Iran is projected to cost taxpayers as much as $100 billion and consumers nearly $150 billion — an estimated $1,100 per household since the war began. Prices overall are also up 3.7% compared to last year, and the Personal Saving Rate is 2.7% — the lowest saving rate in four years.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump vowed to ‘end inflation’ and stop endless wars, yet his war with Iran continues to drive prices to record highs. Trump and his administration officials repeatedly promised Americans that gas prices would come down this summer, but now Labor Day weekend is right around the corner, and there’s no relief in sight. Working families are dipping even further into their savings just to afford basic necessities like gas and groceries, and Trump has made it clear that he doesn’t even care.”
