As millions of kids head back to school, working families are being squeezed as basic school supplies become more expensive than ever in Donald Trump’s economy. Meanwhile, Democrats across the country are working to bring relief — like delivering free school meals, school supplies, and even healthcare — to kids and families struggling to make ends meet.
As Trump drives up costs for working families, Democrats across the country are lowering them. Thanks to Democratic lawmakers in nine states, millions of students are receiving free school meals. In cities such as Albuquerque and Tucson, students are taking public transit to and from school for free, thanks to Democratic leaders. In California and Vermont, parents have access to free after-school care for their children. And from Houston to Baltimore, Democratic mayors are providing everything from school supplies, backpacks, and even healthcare services and vaccine clinics for families who need them most.
In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“As the new school year begins and kids return to the classroom, parents and teachers are feeling squeezed as they pay hundreds of dollars more for back-to-school shopping. Democrats are bringing much-needed relief to families who continue to be crushed by rising prices in Donald Trump’s economy. From delivering free school meals to providing back-to-school supplies for families who can’t afford them, Democrats are fighting for working families as Trump turns his back on them.”
Democrats across the country have also made great strides in improving access to quality education: Democratic governors are increasing school funding, expanding access to preschool, and even increasing literacy and graduation rates while decreasing absenteeism.
