Emin Agalarov, who reportedly requested the meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and the Russian lawyer who promised damaging information on Hillary Clinton, is closely tied to Vladimir Putin and a good friend of the Trump family.

Here is a brief look at their long history together:

Emin Agalarov is the son of a close Putin ally Aras Agalarov, who was a liaison between Trump and Putin during the 2013 Miss Univerise pageant in Moscow and tried to set up a meeting between Trump and Putin.

Politico: “Soon after meeting Trump, the Agalarovs persuaded him to bring the 2013 pageant to one of their marquee properties: Crocus City Hall, a 7,500-seat concert hall they had opened four years earlier.”

Daily Mail, 5/25/16: “Donald Trump has not met Vladimir Putin, Daily Mail Online can reveal – but did use one of his oldest and most trusted political friends to reach out to the Republican as long ago as 2013…At the final of the Miss Universe contest, Kozhin was ensconced in a VIP area with Trump's Russian partner in staging the contest, Aras Agalarov, a billionaire real estate mogul, who is also closely tied to Putin.”

Washington Post: “Donald Trump was in his element, mingling with beauty pageant contestants and business tycoons as he brought his Miss Universe pageant to Russia for a much-anticipated Moscow debut. Nonetheless, Trump was especially eager for the presence of another honored guest: Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump tweeted Putin a personal invitation to attend the pageant, and a one-on-one meeting between the New York businessman and the Russian leader was scheduled for the day before the show. Putin canceled at the last minute, but he sent a decorative lacquered box, a traditional Russian gift, and a warm note, according to Aras Agalarov, a Moscow billionaire who served as a liaison between Trump and the Russian leader.”

Washington Post: “A week after Vladimir Putin awarded him a medal for service to Russia, billionaire developer Aras Agalarov was trying to broker a meeting between Putin and Donald Trump.  It was November 2013, and Agalarov had paid $14 million to stage the Trump-owned Miss Universe pageant, which Trump had flown in to personally oversee. Agalarov knew Trump admired the Russian president, so he spoke to Kremlin contacts to set up a meeting.  Putin canceled at the last minute, but Agalarov said the Russian leader sent Trump a ‘friendly letter’ and an elegant lacquer box.”

Emon Agalarov established a friendship with Donald Trump Sr. after they met in 2013 and he has been in touch with Trump’s children since election day.

At the heart of the episode is Trump’s relationship with Aras Agalarov, a billionaire Russian real estate mogul with ties to Putin, and Agalarov’s rakish son, Emin, 36, a dance-pop singer with ambitions to international stardom who got Trump to appear in one of his music videos.”

After the Miss Universe pageant, Trump and Emin Agalarov traded multiple tweets expressing hope about a partnership over Trump Tower Moscow.

EMIN: “Thank you Sir we look forward to receiving you back in Moscow soon for some new exciting projects @realDonaldTrump”

EMIN: “@realDonaldTrump Mr. Trump thank you for brining #missuniverse to us we had an awesome time TRUMP tower Moscow – lets make it happen !”

TRUMP: “@AgalarovAras   I had a great weekend with you and your family. You have done a FANTASTIC job. TRUMP TOWER-MOSCOW is next. EMIN was WOW!”

Emin Agalarov’s December 2014 birthday video opened with a message from Donald Trump.

YouTube: A birthday video posted by Emin Agalarov on December 14, 2014 opens with Donald Trump sitting at his desk saying the following:  “Emin I can’t believe you’re turning 35.  You’re getting older all the time.  But you’re a winner, you’re achamp, you’re great at real estate, and boy can you entertain. Happy 35^th birthday. Go many, many more.” 

Emin Agalarov has exchanged text messages with Eric Trump since the election and exchanged text messages with Donald Trump Jr. in January 2017.

Forbes: “Emin, who will tour the U.S. in May and play in Miami, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, has traded text messages with Eric Trump in the past few months, and he's keen to resume their Trump partnership. ‘Anything Trump-related I would be interested to pursue,’ he says.”

Forbes: “Among Agalarov’s most striking claims: that he and his billionaire developer father, Aras, had plans to build a Trump Tower in Russia that would now likely be under construction had Trump not run for office; that he has maintained contact with the Trump family since the election, and has exchanged messages with Donald Trump Jr. as recently as January; and that President Trump himself sent a handwritten note to the Agalarovs in November after they congratulated him on his victory.”

Emin Agalarov told Forbes that Trump “does not forget his friends.”

Forbes: Emin Agalarov: “Now that he ran and was elected, he does not forget his friends.”

Trump and the Agalarovs have been planning to partner on projects in Moscow for years, and the Agalarovs still have land reserved in Moscow for a Trump tower.

Aras Agalarov said he and Trump signed an agreement to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

Still, the weekend was fruitful for Trump. Emin Agalarov said his father and Trump would have a building under construction now if he hadn’t run for president.

The Agalarovs’ Crocus City complex on the outskirts of Moscow features a huge concert venue, Russia’s largest movie theater and a giant shopping mall called Vegas.  And like Trump, Aras Agalarov loved to put his name on his creations.  ‘I convinced my father it would be cool to have next to each other the Trump Tower and Agalarov Tower,’ Emin Agalarov said.  Those plans never got off the ground, due mainly to Russia’s crashing economy. The Agalarovs still hope it happens, and at the Crocus site, one muddy field is still reserved for a Trump Tower.  Months before the election, Aras Agalarov said he worried that if Trump won, U.S. conflict-of-interest laws could put a damper on his overseas business ventures.”
