Trump’s Vacation Hypocrisy

After six months of chaos, Trump heads out today for his so-called “working vacation” at his Bedminster golf course, but we should expect a lot more golf than work, after Trump has so far failed to achieve any major legislative accomplishments. Despite criticizing Obama for taking vacations, by the end of the month, Trump will have spent three times as many days at leisure as Obama. Trump said he would not take vacations as president, and told Senators not to leave town without getting health care done, yet here Trump is, headed off on vacation. This is just another example of Trump’s endless hypocrisy.

Trump told Senators they should not leave town until “we can give people great health care.”

TRUMP: “So my message today is really simple: We have to stay here, we shouldn’t leave town, and we should hammer this out and get it done. And not just a repeal.” [Trump Remarks At Lunch With Republican Senators On Health Care, Washington DC, 7/19/17]

TRUMP: “I’m ready to act. People are hurting. Inaction is not an option, and frankly I don’t think we should leave town unless we have a health insurance plan, unless we can give people great health care. Because we’re close, we’re very close.” [Trump Remarks At Lunch With Republican Senators On Health Care, Washington DC, 7/19/17]

Trump said he “probably wouldn’t” take vacations as president.

TRUMP: “Yet he'll fly to Hawaii on a Boeing 747 to play golf. No he doesn't want to change. He'll have an environmental meeting but he'll fly to play golf in Hawaii on a Boeing 747 with the very old engines that are spewing stuff and then he'll come back after a long time. I promise you, I won't be taking very long vacations.” [Trump Town Hall, Hickory NC, 3/14/16]

TRUMP: “If you want vacations, you’re not really in the right business.” [Town Hall, De Pere WI, 3/30/16]

VAN SUSTEREN: “Would you take a vacation now if you were president or are you in the House or the Senate in light of all the demands on all those offices and where we stand?” TRUMP: “I probably wouldn't. I have never been a big vacation person. When I take vacations I go to my places, whether it's Doral in Miami or Los Angeles on the ocean. I can do it in a half a day I've got my vacation.” [On The Record With Greta Van Susteren, Fox News, 8/13/13]

Trump said people only took vacations if they did not enjoy their job.

TRUMP: “‘Don’t take vacations.  What’s the point?  If you’re not enjoying your work, you’re in the wrong job.’  — Think Like A Billionaire”

TRUMP: “Work gives every day a sense of purpose. A job well done provides a sense of pride and accomplishment. I love to work. In fact, I like working so much that I seldom take vacations.” [Donald Trump, Time to Get Tough, published 12/5/11]

Trump defended his frequent visits to his Bedminster golf club, calling the White House “a real dump.”

Golf Magazine: “As President, Trump has already made four visits to the club. He has his own cottage adjacent to the pool; it was recently given a secure perimeter by the Secret Service, leading to the inevitable joke that it’s the only wall Trump has successfully built. Chatting with some members before a recent round of golf, he explained his frequent appearances: ‘That White House is a real dump.’”

Golf Magazine: SHIPNUCK: “Yeah, I had a conversation with Ms. Hicks as well, which was quite enlightening—the confrontational and rude tone of the phone call… She tried the same line on me, ‘That’s a lie and needs to be retracted.’ I explained to her: It’s not a lie. The president said this in front of eight or nine members and staffers at [Trump] Bedminster. It was his first visit to the club after he had been residing in the White House.”

Trump repeatedly attacked President Obama for taking vacations, and questioned his work ethic.

TRUMP: “Why is @Barackobama always campaigning or on vacation?”

TRUMP: “@Barackobama played golf yesterday. Now he heads to a 10 day vacation in Martha’s Vineyard. Nice work ethic.”

VAN SUSTEREN: “What does — I mean, obviously, that doesn't sound a — send a good message if, indeed, the American people think that he likes a, quote, ‘vacation.’”  TRUMP: “Well, I mean, it sends a bad message. Here we have a country that really is going to hell in a handbasket. Let's not kid ourselves. What's happening to this country is horrible. All over the world, they're talking about it. And we have a president that's constantly — whether it's Martha's Vineyard or some place else, constantly on vacation. I mean, all the time he's on vacation! So I think it sends a very, very bad message. We have to work in this country to bring it back.” [On The Record, Fox News, 8/15/11]

TRUMP: “I You wouldn't think that that is something — that's not something — a P.R. person says, that's not a good time for you to be playing golf. That's really bad. That was just bad. It just looks to me like he is tired of the position. I may be wrong. I hope I'm wrong. He has got two more years as president. To take all these vacations and all the fundraisers, and on our dime.” [On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, Fox News, 10/6/14]

TRUMP: “Obama is on yet another two-day West Coast fundraising swing. Has to fit it in before his 15 day tax-payer funded vacation.”

TRUMP: “It’s Jan. 2. President Obama should end his vacation early & get back to Washington to straighten out the ObamaCare catastrophe—or end it.”

TRUMP: “Congress should get back to Washington, but @Barackobama doesn’t want to interrupt his vacation in Martha’s Vineyard.”

TRUMP: “If Obama is concerned about the border, he should stop vacationing. Gov’t will save millions, which it can use to stop illegal migration.”

TRUMP: “Can you believe that, with all of the problems and difficulties facing the U.S. President Obama spent the day playing golf. Worse than carter”

Trump blamed Obama taking vacations for his inability to work with Congress.

CUOMO: “What do you do when the other side doesn't want to negotiate and you find something you want to do that you think is right. Then what do you do.” TRUMP: “He's been away for two weeks playing golf. He's not exactly trying very hard to get it done. I think-” [New Day, CNN, 1/4/16]

TRUMP: “You're supposed to get along with Congress and cajole and get into a room and work out deals and make compromises. He doesn't do that. Because he's unable to do it because he's spending three weeks playing golf in California. You know, it's hard to do that when playing golf all day long. He spent – like he's on the PGA tour. He plays so much golf.” [Fox and Friends, Fox News, 1/3/16]
