Following the news that President Trump is ‘seriously considering’ a pardon for ex-Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who was found guilty of criminal contempt,  DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement:

“Joe Arpaio spent his entire career spewing racist hatred against immigrants. Instead of catching criminals, he tore apart families. Instead of making people feel safe, he made them feel scared. And he built what one of his own deputies called a ‘wall of distrust’ between the police and the Latino community.

“Now Trump wants to reward Arpaio’s bigotry with a presidential pardon. But the president can’t pretend to condemn racism on one hand while pardoning racists on the other. Joe Arpaio is nothing more than a bully with a badge. That’s why I sued him when I worked at the Department of Justice and it’s why Arizona voters booted him out of office last November. Pardoning Sheriff Arpaio would be an insult to justice and a slap in the face to immigrant communities in Arizona and across the country.”

Tras conocerse la noticia de que el presidente Trump está ‘considerando seriamente’ otorgar un perdón al ex-alguacil Joe Arpaio, quien fue declarado culpable de desacato criminal, el presidente Director del Comité Nacional Demócrata, Tom Pérez realizó las siguientes declaraciones:

“Joe Arpaio pasó toda su carrera regurgitando odio racista contra los inmigrantes. En lugar de atrapar criminales, desunió a familias. En lugar de hacer que la gente se sintiera segura, los hizo sentirse asustados y construyó lo que uno de sus propios colegas llamó un ‘muro de desconfianza’ entre la policía y la comunidad latina.

“Ahora, Trump quiere recompensar el fanatismo de Arpaio con un perdón presidencial. El presidente no puede pretender condenar el racismo por un lado mientras que perdona a los racistas por el otro.  Joe Arpaio no es más que un bravucón en uniforme. Es por eso que lo demandé cuando trabajé en el Departamento de Justicia y es por eso que los votantes de Arizona lo despojaron de su cargo el pasado mes de noviembre. Perdonar al alguacil Arpaio sería un insulto a la justicia y una bofetada a la comunidad inmigrante de Arizona y todo el país.”
