Jared Kushner’s real estate company is under fire for wrongfully taking advantage of benefits intended to help lower- and middle-income people. The Kushner family business is now under investigations in multiple states for allegedly attempting to drive out tenants from their properties using falsified documents and improper fees.

Today, New York City’s buildings regulator launched investigations at more than a dozen Kushner properties.

Associated Press: “New York City’s buildings regulator launched investigations at more than a dozen Kushner Cos. properties Wednesday following an Associated Press report that the real estate developer routinely filed false paperwork claiming it had zero rent-regulated tenants in its buildings across the city.”

On Monday, the New York city council launched a joint investigation with the Housing Rights Initiative into Kushner’s business.

Reuters: “A New York tenants rights group and local politician said on Monday they would launch an investigation into the real estate company formerly headed by Jared Kushner, a top aide to President Donald Trump, over alleged falsification of building permits.”

This isn’t the first time Kushner’s company has faced allegations of taking advantage of tenants. His company is currently fighting a lawsuit alleging that they charged improper fees and threatened tenants with eviction in Maryland.

Baltimore Sun: “Two tenants filed the class action in Baltimore Circuit Court in September. Tenae Smith and Howard Smith, who are not related, allege that Westminster Management has been charging improper fees and threatening eviction to force payment. They also allege that the company has violated the Maryland Consumer Debt Collection Act by using collection tactics they say are meant to ‘abuse or harass’ them.”

Meanwhile, Kushner’s and Trump’s companies are in private talks to team up on a new development, raising even more ethics concerns.

New York Times: “The Kushners are in private discussions to have President Trump’s company manage at least one hotel at the center of the development known as Pier Village, according to people briefed on the previously unreported talks. […] The long-running talks blur the line between family, business and politics in ways that lack precedent: Both Mr. Trump and Mr. Kushner, the president’s senior adviser and son-in-law, retain financial interests in their family businesses.”
