DNC Chair on Trump’s Proposal To Dismantle Departments of Labor and Education
June 21, 2018
DNC Chair and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez released the following statement in response to Trump’s proposal to reorganize the federal government:
“Dismantling the Department of Labor is not only an attack on the thousands of dedicated employees who work day and night to level the playing field for everyone in this country, but would leave our workers in limbo. The Department of Labor provides critical services to protect working conditions, help retirees, and ensure that every worker is paid a fair wage for their hard work.
“Furthermore, Trump’s idea to move the federal food stamp program under the renamed Department of Health and Human Welfare opens the door for him to fulfill a longtime Republican goal of gutting social safety programs Americans rely on, including SNAP and Medicaid benefits.
“This move hurts the children, workers and families – those who need our help the most. Instead, Trump is attempting to play political games with our education and our workforce in order to please his base. This is unacceptable, and Democrats will continue to fight to ensure that the government is there to work for the American people and help provide them with the resources they need to succeed.”
