DNC Chair Statement on the Passing of Amelia Boynton Robinson
August 26, 2015
Washington, D.C. – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement on the passing of Amelia Boynton Robinson:
“Today we mark the loss of a true American hero in Amelia Boynton Robinson. She dedicated her life to the fight for justice and worked tirelessly to expand voting rights for all Americans.
“Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of joining Ms. Boynton Robinson, President Obama, Rep. John Lewis and others in Selma to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Selma movement. The leadership and heroism she displayed on the Edmund Pettus Bridge helped lead to President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Half a century later, we honor her by championing the guiding principle behind her life’s work: the belief that our nation and our democracy are stronger when more people have the ability to participate.
“My deepest condolences are with her family, friends, and all who drew inspiration from her courageous example.”
