Joint DNC Statement on Fourth Anniversary of DACA Implementation
August 15, 2016
DNC Chair Donna Brazile, DNC Hispanic Caucus Chair Iris Martinez, DNC Vice Chair Maria Elena Durazo issued the following joint statement on the fourth anniversary of the implementation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration policy:
“The lives of hundreds of thousands of DREAMers changed dramatically four years ago today when the Obama administration implemented DACA. For the first time in their lives, these vibrant and talented young people – who have grown up in this country and call it home – could finally pursue their dreams without worrying about the threat of deportation. We could not be more proud of President Obama for taking bold action and giving them peace of mind when Republicans continue to obstruct efforts to pass meaningful immigration reform. Simply put, to these hard-working young people, DACA isn’t just another policy, it’s a life-changer.
“The fact remains, however, that we need a pathway to citizenship to help all of those living in the shadows. That’s why we need to elect leaders up and down the ballot who understand the critical importance of passing comprehensive immigration reform. Unfortunately, instead of heeding the lessons of their 2012 GOP autopsy report and embracing immigrants and immigration reform, the Republican Party has nominated Donald Trump, one of the most anti-immigrant candidates in our nation’s history. Trump wants to end DACA and deport all undocumented immigrants regardless of their circumstances or their contributions to our country. That’s not leadership, and it’s another reminder why we must elect Hillary Clinton the next President of the United States. Unlike Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton is committed to introducing immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship within her first 100 days in office and she will continue defending DACA and DAPA from partisan attacks.”
