In response to Donald Trump’s MAGA VP contenders voting against legislation codifying Roe v. Wade’s protections for abortion access, DNC spokesperson Aida Ross released the following statement: 

“When Donald Trump overturned Roe v. Wade and paved the way for cruel abortion bans across the country, his VP contenders cheered him on, backing plans to outlaw abortion nationwide if given the chance. Today, these same MAGA minions blocked legislation to codify the overwhelmingly popular protections Roe gave women for decades before Trump overturned it. Every anti-choice vote Trump’s MAGA VP contenders make is another crucial reminder that our basic freedoms are on the line in November — and voters will soundly reject Trump and whichever extremist joins his losing ticket.”

NEW: As Trump continues to brag about overturning Roe v. Wade, his MAGA VP contenders in the Senate blocked legislation codifying Roe’s protections for abortion access.

“Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked legislation led by Democrats to revive the protections of Roe v. Wade in the wake of the Supreme Court eliminating the nationwide right to abortion.”

Republicans who voted against include: J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio, Tim Scott, Tom Cotton, Bill Hagerty, Katie Britt, Marsha Blackburn, Joni Ernst, and Mike Lee.

Trump: “I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of … Roe v. Wade.”

The majority of Americans support abortion access and the protections granted under Roe. 

CNN: “A 64% majority of US adults say they disapprove of last year’s Supreme Court ruling that women do not have a constitutional right to an abortion, with half strongly disapproving – an assessment that’s almost entirely unchanged from CNN’s poll last July in the immediate wake of the decision.”

Axios: “Most Americans support abortion access one year after Roe v. Wade: poll”

USA Today: “Americans overwhelmingly oppose the next goal of many anti-abortion activists, to enact a federal law banning abortion nationwide. By 80%-14%, those surveyed opposed that idea, including 65% of Republicans and 83% of independents.”

Just last month, Trump’s VP contenders voted against protecting access to IVF and contraception.

Just like Trump, his potential running mates are anti-choice extremists who want to ban abortion and rip away reproductive freedoms.
