After Supreme Court Strikes Down Trump’s Illegal Tariffs, Trump Announces Even Higher Tariffs to Keep Taxing Americans

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling this morning that Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs are illegal, Trump is doubling down on his trade war, announcing at a press conference today that he is imposing a new 10% global tariff “over and above our normal tariffs already being charged.”

Trump’s additional tariffs are likely to raise prices even more for American consumers who have already absorbed 95% of the costs of Trump’s existing tariffs. Trump asserted that he “always had the right to do tariffs” and “we have alternatives, great alternatives.”

Trump has previously vowed on numerous occasions to reimpose tariffs “one way or the other” and admitted that he will “figure something else out.” The White House has also reportedly been preparing a “Plan B” to reinstate Trump’s tariffs. Trump’s National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett echoed these plans, saying this morning, “we’re going to adjust and use other authorities that we have because we’ve now seen the proof is in the pudding, that these tariffs work.”

In response, DNC Rapid Response Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:

“Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs are an illegal tax that cost Americans hundreds of billions of dollars, and now he wants to take more of Americans’ hard-earned money. Trump was elected on the promise to lower costs, but all everyday Americans have gotten from him are a disastrous trade war, sky-high prices, and millions of layoffs. Trump owes every American a tariff rebate check for the illegal and unhinged trade war he’s been waging on the economy for the past year.”

Trump’s disastrous tariffs have raised prices and caused mass layoffs, and Americans collectively paid an additional $175 billion in higher costs last year. It’s no wonder 60% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s tariffs, including more than 1 in 4 Republicans.
